Easy.
IL2 in an SEOW campaign environment.

All action taking place on the battlefield and in the air has been planned by humans in as realistic a full war situation as can be planned and played in any simulation with the exception of commercial military simulators.

I agree that the DCS series models aircraft and objects beautifully but with no capacity to add and change missions for aircraft or ground units to a live multiplayer server or with a similar battlefield planning system available such as SEOW it can't yet match the immersion level of IL2 with SEOW.

I loved Falcon 4.0 for its great campaign, never had so much the feeling of being part of a conflict again.

SH3 + 4.

Flying Il-2 online with my squad, however the sometime endless waiting in HL and the constant bickering in the chat drove me away from it.

edit: forgot the X-Wing series, even with it`s scripted missions and the for today poor graphics, it was immersive as hell.

Aces of the Deep. It remains the best realisation of what we, perhaps inaccurately, call a dynamic campaign I've still ever played. On top of that there were a whole bunch of features that leave the modern and far more technically advanced sub sims like the recent Silent Hunter games standing. Best damage management ever, for a start; working wolf packs; 'Be More Agressive!' smile

I remember getting hit bad by escorts and sitting in the mud for 18 hours at the bottom of the St. George channel hoping that my crew could get the pumps working again. our scope and sonar had been destroyed, torpedo tubes were leaking and I thought it was all over. We fixed the pumps and got rid of as much flooding as we could and then, with the oxygen running out and CO2 building up, and without any idea what awaited for us above, I gave the order to blow the tanks one last time...and against all out fears up we went into a still, quiet, moonlit night. Superb.

Most immersive sim:

Janes F/A-18

Flying a night strike (in a dark room ) against a modern integrated air defense network; sorting my radio communications from the comms of a dozen other flights; working with the strike package; dealing with information overload; delivering the ordinance and nursing your ship home as cascading damage causes systems to fail on the long way home.

Then a successful night trap.
I needed a cigarette and a drink at the end of some of those missions.

Got one.

The Dam Busters add on for CFS2. Beautiful summer days with the curtains closed to get night vision for that bomb run. What a rush when you put an Upkeep against the wall. The only bomber sim I really got into. It had missions so you could go from the testing phase of the weapons at Chesil beach and Derwent Dam, all the way through the war using them- The dam raids, Tirpitz, can't remember them all.

You know, the weather is awful here today, I think I will dig out the boxes and do it again (if I can get it to run on a PC that has to be 5 times more powerfull than the one I last played it on !!

Sadly no one goes for immersion in that regard anymore.

I still hold out that Clod will turn out to be a multi role combat game, like wwiionline but not so boring. more like a sim version of BF3, but thats OT

Great!!! Someone remembers and has played it. biggrin

These Origin games were the best.
I was blown away by the story. (Strike Commander, Wing Commander, Pacific Strike).

Another great game was the F-14 on the C-64, where you had to go through a training (which you could fail!) just to be able to fly the tomcat.

Loved these early years, we had bad graphics, worse simulation, but huge immersion.
Or just getting old, huh? smile

For me the most immersive flightsims were in chronological order:

Falcon4 (the very best!)
IL2 with the campaign addon: Rebirth of Honor
DCS-A10C for the great JTAC implementation and some very well designed user/stock missions.

When CloDs AI, DM and FM gets fixes, there is another candidate:
CloD with the campaign addon: Wick vs. Dundas Bf-110 campaign
