I was wondering about the reason for the steep approach, since there are no obstacles coming in from the east (or the west really). According to wikipedia it's due to noise restrictions and prior to the runway extension in 1992, the glideslope was 7.5 degrees.

Yep.. Noise abatement. It is a factor in a lot of metro airports. I can't recall offhand, but DCA (Washington DC) also has some funky noise abatement procedures that require a maximum angle of climb and a reduced engine power setting once into the second segment (or something similar to that..I'm memory paraphrasing). Airports such as Baltimore (BWI) have noise sensors located around the periphery that record the decibels of aircraft landing and approaching. We've gotten several "nastygrams" from BWI airport authority for breaking the noise restriction for runway 33R in the middle of the night (like 1AM). It is the preferred runway for us since it gets us to the FBO a bit quicker (and our cardiac patients appreciate that..) They do have a notation in the airfield notes:

NOISE ABATEMENT PROCEDURES IN EFFECT - RESTRICTION FOR RY 15L/33R EXCEPT FOR EMERGENCIES OR MERCY FLIGHTS CTC AMGR FOR INFORMATION

So we get the letter, we send them a response that tells them we were on an air ambulance leg and that's that.

That was definitely a mistake by the Bae 146. Severely gusty winds, a late flare, perhaps a little low on energy, the pressure of the mandatory touchdown zone..etc..etc.. You can't trust YouTube comments, but one of them says the plane was barged out of LCY after that.

Got yt surfing due to this vid.

A nice and unspectacular approach, which shows

a). how far away we are still in simulators and

b). I NEVER EVER would like to to in bad weather, even being only a FSX jockey.

Never landed at London City Airport but taken off from it a couple of times. I'm not the best flier, I have to admit, and I hate leaving from here. It's like you're on a moonshot.

John Wayne has a pretty steep climb out due to noise abatement measures. I've flown out of LAX, Ontario, Long Beach, and John Wayne airports and your climb out of John Wayne seems almost vertical. The other three don't even come close to it.

They didn't. They were way too late in flaring, and probably should have done a missed approach in the first place. That plane never flew out of LCY.

I was talking about touching down with so much crab. Of course they goobered the round out and flare, that was so apparent it goes without saying. I was talking about how we have seen a lot of this commercial aircraft landing with side loading of the gear in these videos.

Pffft ....

Try some of the 'airports' (I use the term loosely) in Papua New Guinea.

These are RPT runways used every day.

Isn't there an old saying that "any landing that you walk away from is a good landing" wink

This probably explains why taking off out of San Diego's airport was such a steep takeoff. I haven't been on too many plane rides but this takeoff was pretty steep going out over the ocean. Then when we turned to heat back east I was basically laying on the glass window next to me.
