Interesting Time article about guided .50 cal bullets. Ah technology, dumbing things down for us and taking the fun out of certain things.
If this enters production I don't think the skill set of the sniper will shift into other areas such as infil/exfil, camo etc... rather than just the kill.

There was an 80s movie where people were shot
by using some guided ammo. Some sci-fi flick...
shows to see that what is make believe in the past
can be reality in the near future!

Staying away from the .50 cals just got a whole new meaning.... Then again wait until this gets miniaturized even further and it's in most small arms.... wait until this is sized un just a slotch and it's put in aircraft guns...

Therev might be even "better" things to invent:

Screamers

Or think of a nano robots war. I am sure the are already thinking of all kinds of things to make the world a better place. duh

Seeing these kinds of things reminds me of a quote by Sherman Potter from MASH.

"If they can invent better ways to kill each other, why can't they invent a way to end this stupid war?"

Just goes to show the stupidity of man and governments and how true that statement is today.

An improved round. Can even do some tracking and adjustment. OK.

Someone still has to use fieldcraft to get it to the right place, stay concealed, select the right target, conduct the engagement, and then egress without getting killed. Nah, thet'll still be a need for snipers.

This^^^

From what I gather, shooting is only 10% of a sniper's job and skills anyway. You need to become a recon GOD before becoming a true sniper. You need to have become an elite in the ranks of infantrymen before going to recon. You need to be at one with a radio, calling in strikes, enemy positions, be the eyes of the brigade, spotting enemy movements, identify ALL enemy equipment.

Besides, snipers from my regiment set the world record in combat, a good 800m FURTHER than the max range of this system! And they did it ten years ago. Saved some American soldier's lives too.

Frankly, this looks like something where the laser should be part of the spotting scope, so that the laser isn't pulled off target under recoil. Spotter effectively becomes the "shooter", while the shooter becomes the "recoil absorber"!

Edit: the most interesting part of this is that you could do moving target tracking, and shooting from a moving platform...imagine a Taliban running down the valley, hit by a guided bullet from a next-gen Reaper...ok not a Reaper as those would fly too high and too expensive to risk down low, but you get my drift.

Imagine this in BF3. It's bad enough as it is.

Oddly enough, the way to spoof the laser is to jump up and down while running in a zig-zag.
