Ok, just dropped a GBU-12 no problem with the TGP locating target SPI created in the HUD. Used DSMS to change profile to CCIP, was slightly off target but I can work on that. Launched a maverick no problem and killed the target. Starting to get the hang of it except...

Come to drop a GBU-38 using CCRP and an IAM delivery and the bomb would not drop. Had the ASL through the IAM reticule and waited for the release cue to move counter-clockwise until I got the release cue of 'MAN REL' on the HUD and pickled and held down but nothing happened. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Next time that happens look at your indicated airspeed. If it says '50' then that is why - the pitot tube has malfunctioned.

And the cause of which is? I know the manuals say not to turn the pitot on too long before takeoff as it can overheat, but I wonder if this is modelled in the sim. Also, how long is "too long"? Other ways the pitot tube can be wrecked? biggrin

And that would only cause IAM releases to be affected as a normal CCIP release worked and I am pretty sure my airspeed was normally displayed.

Is there some confusion with CCRP vs CCIP? I've dropped two -38s just now, CCRP mode, no problem. Tried changing them to CCIP and it won't let me.

From what I read, your procedure is correct. I assume you've set your target as SPI since you're getting the MAN REL cue. Try again with a different mission?

Hmmm, I'll try again.

EDIT: Tried it on a quick mission and worked fine.

A buncha months ago I was having GBU issues and it took a while before noticing that my speed was 50 - and this did not happen in any pattern that I could discern. But typically for me I was at high altitude. So there was a discussion about the pitot tube and its modelling in the sim, like it or not, that led me to including the Pitot Heater Switch in my start ups.

If you're doing a ramp start, make sure to complete the full alignment--i.e. wait for the flashing align ready message on the CDU.

The JDAMs will not release otherwise. Check the DSMS for the JDAM status, too.
