Yes...from a soccer match. The fans team won, and they stormed the pitch to beat the life out of the losing visiting team. What a classy bunch of fans...

More and more reason to have ESPN. Never have to leave your home and contend with a bunch of angry hooligans bent on urban chaos.

There were some desasters linked to soccer games :

Heysel desaster

and

100 hours war

and a well documented site about it, which saw the last dogfights involving warbirds :

Corsairs vs Mustangs !

If there is anything that displays how small-minded humans are it is this ability to kill each other over a game.

How does sports/a game become so important to people ? I am always amazed to see it.

Sometimes it feels (certain) people just need an outlet for their aggression. Especially in cultures where macho behavior is the norm. Can be a game, can be a (small) piece of land or the correct pronunciation of a deity's name, can be a glass of beer. They're just looking for an excuse.

Its borne of the recent revolution and instability, with resentment against the regime being the key factor. Though Egyptian fans are known for violence, it has precious little to do with killing each other over a game or goal on this occasion....It is almost entirely politically motivated. I have seen footage of policemen and security at that match doing absolutely nothing, and quite deliberately. Normal security measures were dropped and knives allowed to be brought into the stadium. The hooligan ringleaders involved are political zealots and militants.

That said, yes human beings in large groups can be remarkably stupid....It's as if a herd mentality takes over and peoples individual IQ lowers by 90%....turning people into chimpanzees. The US is hardly immune to this either, but tend to just smash up cities and private property etc instead of beating each other up. Err, apart from things like the infamous 'Ten cent beer night', of course.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Cent_Beer_Night

'A large number of intoxicated fans – some armed with knives, chains, nunchaku and portions of stadium seats that they had torn apart – surged onto the field, and others hurled bottles from the stands.

Realizing that the Rangers' lives might be in danger, Ken Aspromonte, the Indians' manager, ordered his players to grab bats and help the Rangers, attacking the team's own fans in the process. Rioters began throwing steel folding chairs, and Cleveland relief pitcher Tom Hilgendorf was hit in the head by one of them. Hargrove, involved in a fistfight with a rioter, had to fight another on his way back to the Texas dugout'.

'The bases were pulled up and stolen (never to be returned) and many rioters threw a vast array of objects including cups, rocks, bottles, batteries from radios, hot dogs, popcorn containers, and folding chairs. As a result, umpire crew chief Nestor Chylak, realizing that order would not be restored in a timely fashion, forfeited the game to Texas. He too was a victim of the rioters as one struck him with part of a stadium seat, cutting his head.[3] His hand was also cut by a thrown rock. He later called the fans "uncontrollable beasts" and stated that he'd never seen anything like what had happened, "except in a zoo".'

I think Philadelphia baseball fans recently decided to set fire to Philly and smash up police cars in riots etc after winning some world series game? I saw Vancouver hockey fans going ballistic with hundreds injured in rioting on the BBC recently.....the list goes on.

RE: Football @Skatezilla, funny vid and I laughed but the UK has nowhere near the worst fans these days. smile That would be South American countries, Eastern Europeans (particularly Poles), even the Germans and Dutch have more violent firms these days. The Turks are extremely violent too. South Americans take frikkin machine guns to matches and shoot it out! Nutters.

People are fecking idiots, by and large and wherever you go. Simple as that. screwy

That's because you're probably not used with the soccer crowd otherwise you would have no illusion about the fact that tribal/ ethnic/ clanic hatred and violence are still deeply there, even amongst people who spend some years in republican schools learning the basics of tolerance and democracy. In our European countries, at every level, every league, soccer fans can be the most brutal barbarians ever, from the South, with Spanish and Italians, through France of course,to the North , where Dutch and Scandinavians are not the least to behave shamefully. Here, for instance, no father would take his kids to a Paris vs Marseilles game...

And this is why soccer is the only professional sport that has matches that can end in a tie.

Safer for everyone.

It's blatantly apparent that this violence has very little to do with football and very much to do with the politcal situation in Egypt.

Obvious trolling is obvious.

it's not a sport match it is a arena, this is why i never liked or understood fan behaviours and soccer, you put youself in the "team" place, even tough you do NOTHING, and this is not related to the muslims or a-habs,remove the extensive police patrols and cordons in western games and you have the exact same thing, here in rio its flamengo against vasco or fluminense, pratically the whole police force is transfered to the stadium surrounding area and public transport stops to avoid conflicts, in portugal i saw this with porto.

It is part of mentality of men to see outsiders as agressors and react to it violently, we will never change,as this is instinctive behaviour left by our ancestors.

Most of the reports said the game had little to do with the post game indecentcies, it was more because of the political conflict and all that bs going on inside Egypt.

i wasnt trying to say anything about the UK, i was simply putting some humor in the thread.

i was in Vancouver for Game 7 last year, and it was revolting.

shameful! People complain about the violence of American football and rugby matches, but at least the fans of these sports do not form a mob and kill others!

I agree. Funny how the most violent games have the most civilised fans, I suppose the bloodlust is sated by the combat on field lol. Shameful indeed. A bit like the violence in these baseball games for example. I especially enjoyed the Kung Fu kick to the guys head @45seconds. *Voice of Maximus* ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!! hahaha

Slightly embarrassed for them watching that tbh. If you're going to fight, at least fight properly, not like 10 yr old girls....LMAO. That said, I can understand the need for violence to break the monotony of a game about as 'thrilling' as watching gloss paint dry.

biggrin

Hey ..just because Americans cant play cricket biggrin But yeah, i drifted away from wathing cricket when i kept finding myself asleep on the couch with drool on my shirt. Soccer though can really take it to the next level of boredom..until someone takes a dive and has a cry, then at least it is good for a chuckle..and since they dont televise the after match fan activities all the fun is taken out of it as a tv watcher.

Now for real sports tv bloodletting you need to go back to the State of Origin fights, they are some big lads who can hit ..when they arent swinging and missing smile Baseball is always entertaining for a good punch session though.

Hehehe, I saw Gordon Tallis at the end there, good player but a dirty b*stard. Got in a few rugger fights meself (Union) in playing days but I never started them. Honest to goodness, lol. I'm not like that. biggrin Shake hands at the final whistle and have a beer afters, no harm done!

This is Tallis getting 'served' by Englands Terry O'connor lol...quite a good scrap. Tallis's best shots just bounced off O'Connors granite dome, then he rearranged Tallis' face, nice uppercut too lol. biggrin I like Tallis though he's all right. All part of the game really.

Gotta love Aussie commentators though....'Roight on the Pecker!!!' hahaha

O'connor can certainly take a punch smile Bumped into Tallis at a Metallica concert a few years ago, not much of a talker , i think he may have thought i was a swooning fan or somesuch..or one of those guys who was ready to throw insults at him over the weekend footy match.

I was once brave enough , ok ok ..smashed off me nut, young and ten foot tall, i called a whole footy team at a nightclub a bunch of ass bandits because they were listening to Boy George and chanting away as they do. I think i was lucky to escape with my life that night biggrin
