A laser guided bullet:

Kinda like that '80s Tom Selleck movie "Runaway," if I remember right.

I'm imagining the guidance system installed in the nose of an M430 40mm HEDP grenade. Even better, downsize the M224 60mm mortar to 40mm, develop a bomb using the M430 warhead and the guidance unit in the article, and develop a target data input system that allows you to offset the target from the aiming point, so that you could lase a wall or building and have the bomb hit long or short as needed. Tie it all in with Blue Force Tracker so supporting fire could come from anyone within range.

Interesting but I don't know how useful this capability will be in actuality, especially given that the specialized smoothbore gun required wouldn't be much good at anything else and this seems like it would be a very expensive way to deliver a mere bullet.

agree cool technology but it would really be nice to see money being spent on something peaceful once in a while

20% of budget is Defense related. 60% of Budget is Welfare (including SS and Medicare).

Seems the money is going to something peaceful most of the time.

Only one of these 2 categories are Constitutional.

They have this in Bullet Storm, a sniper rifle that you can guide in the bullet. Not so far fetched!

I don't think it is difficult to build a smooth bore gun. They obviously shot their bullet out of a gun of some sort. Maybe a modified sniper rig. Remember the old recoiless rifles we use to have in the 50's and 60's? This is like that, except smaller and laser guided. I like it. Any tech that keeps our guys out of harms way is great. Take some of that $500B we are cutting from our defense budget and arm a drone with this thing. Mobile sniping like never before. Talk about limiting collateral damage.

Bah.

Not impressed.

Dumb bullet. Smart operator, smart spotter...multiple kills at 600 to 800m FURTHER than this "laser guided boolet" has done!

But I do like the idea of 40mm or 60mm laser guideds though... biggrin
