The last two gameplay videos that I've tried to upload to my YouTube channel have failed because of 'unsupported file types', according to the site.

I am using the same file type as I always have, and have created the videos in the same way as I always have... WMV saved out via Windows Movie Maker and now Windows Live Movie Maker. I have over 200 gameplay videos on there so I think I know what I'm doing!

I recently uploaded some DVD clips edited, saved and uploaded in the exact same fashion - and they are went OK.

I've tried converting the two videos to different file formats, same upload error. I've made sure that the videos are valid by opening them in Windows Media Player (a quick test) and they are both OK.

This seems to have happened since Google took over. Any suggestions for what can I do to fix my problem? Why does it only seem like gameplay videos are the problem?

Thanks!

I just had a thought, I used to save all my videos at 640x480 which resulted in a 5500kbps data rate. Recently, I've been using 1440x1080 which uses a 24000kbps data rate - as 'recommended' by Windows Live Movie Maker.

I've just converted the two 1440x1080 videos to 640x480 and am now trying to re-upload one. So far it seems to be working!

Unfortunately this means lower-quality videos but hopefully I'll at least be able to get them online.

Still, any input for future videos would be appreciated. Where is the conflict with YouTube, the movie resolution or the data rate? And how can I achieve one without the other, in order to try and keep as much quality as possible?

Oh no! I just finished uploading and processing the two videos at YouTube but they appear as all distorted colors and sound, as well as missing sound!

The uploading process went OK but I guess my conversion process wasn't the answer. I give up!

youtube is picky,

Doesn’t Like certain WMV Codec Settings, or the WMA 9.0 / 10.0 Professional Audio Codec at All.

I use 1280x720 WMV9 VC1, WMA 10 (non professional). @ 8000Kbit Video, 256 Kbit Stereo Audio, those uploaded fine. Clear HD etc.

I dropped the video to 6000Kbit/sec for a few months in October; the videos looked fine on my PC but got really blocky on Youtube even at 720p.

Youtube’s max Resolution Support is 1080p,
Youtube’s max bitrate support is 8000Kbit/sec Video ( not recommended you exceed 8000kbit, I’ve done 9200kbit once)

Videos need to be 1:1 Pixel format, yada yada yada…

Their content filter is getting ridiculously strict though, I had uploaded a video of some of my hockey practice footage, they flagged it, deleted it, and slapped my account with copyright warning for both music that was playing over the intercom of the arena and one of the ads on the boards. So now i have to be careful what i upload in regards to mini-movies for games w/ music or they will delete my account. and yeah, i protested and told them, but apparently the audio was clear enough to eventually be caught by their audio filter, and someone flagged it as copyrighted (prolly the record label).

24000kbit for 1440x1080 is overkill, you shouldn't need more than 12000kbit

the recommended is overkill, by alot..

1440x1080 is known as HDV/HDLite (usually HD1080p camcorders use this resolution when outputting via FireWire instead of HDMI).

from Microsoft's "guide" site:
720p HDTV:
1280x720 - widescreen - WMV9 Pro - 6.19 Mbps

1080 HDV:
1440x1080 - standard w/ 16:9 pixel layout - WMV9 Pro - 8.19 Mbps

1080-HDV - VC1:
1440x1080 - standard w/ 16:9 Pixel layout - WMV9 Advanced VC1 - 11.14 Mbps

1080-HDTV VC1:
1920x1080 - widescreen - WMV 9 Advanced VC-1 - 15.4 Mbps

like i said though, tried the 6190kbit for my 720p and they were a bit blocky after you-tube re-compressed to their format (FLV and MP4,
but at 8000Kbit they were fine.
I Use:
720p HDTV - VC1 :
1280x720 - widescreen - WMV9 Advanced VC1 - 8.00 Mbps Video

Also if you can Look into using Expression 4 Encoder, as it has VC-1 support, which is Better for HD Resolutions, not to mention faster and has more options for WMV, (Mpeg-4 is locked unless you buy it.)

I have just now been finally able to upload the two problematic videos to YouTube with no errors and with no color distortion or anything!

I basically took the original saved WMV files with a resolution of 1440x1080 and 24000kbps bit rate and, with FormatFactory, converted them to AVI with a resolution of 640x480 VGA and 5000kbps bit rate. Everything else I left as default. Needless to say, the file sizes went down a lot as well, which is always a good thing!

There is some further quality loss but nothing too extreme for what these videos are for.

So it looks like I will have to go through this extra process now, for gameplay videos at least. I wish YouTube hadn't of tightened-up on their file type/encoding/screen res/bit rate allowance.
