I have read quite some books about air combat. They always recommend attacking at full speed, conserving energy etc., but I have read some obscure hints that a novice mistake is not using throttle at all.

How do I must use throttle?

Thanks.

Throttle is one actually one of your control surfaces, as are the elevators, ailerons and rudder. Slow the throttle and you induce the same change you make when you adjust two other surfaces together (such as right rudder and left aileron). In most online combat matches, the newer guys attack too fast, and keep the throttle up near 100% in many maneuvers. This not only puts them in black out or very close to it, but some maneuvers dont work best at full speed. It takes time to get used to actually slowing down in order to speed up, if you catch the zen in that sentence. This is even more noticeable once you move beyond throttle and work with throttle and prop pitch together.

Still myself on the learning curve, not much of an expert. Nonetheless, I think it's matter of adversary; I mean, one thing is attacking a B-17 and one else dogfighting with an Hurricane. In latter case, also real pilot reports say not to overshoot enemy, to avoid becoming from hunter, prey. In former one, I think you would be as faster as possible than your target, so full of gunners.

I will feel it a bit counter intuitive since I mostly use Zoom and Boom.

I have tried to learn how throttle affects flying. I think it functions as an elevator since it affects the wings's lift. It functions as an aileron due the torque effect. I found it most a nuisance than any help, it produces slipping also. Which are their uses?

I suppose the idea is to cut throttle to get tighter turns and accelerate when going straight. Is this correct? Even for Zoom and Boom?.

I will prefer spend my time polishing than discovering. I can't find any literature about their use in combat. Thanks.

Throttle helps you to be fast, to get close to an enemy and to escape as well. Furthermore, just try not to cook your engine! wink
