Yeah, shows where they come here for resources, especially water, really bug me. I mean, there's all kinds of water on Europa and Enceledus, and I would think melting that ice, while requiring some work, would still be a lot easier than fighting humanity.

Not only that, but they're wasting huge amounts of fuel/energy by coming so deep into our sun's gravity well.

Really, the only plausible reason that I can think of for aliens wanting to invade earth would be if they needed it to live on... which of course assumes they happen to like EXACTLY the same environment we do. Even then, I'd say a civilization capable of interstellar travel on the scale necessary to threaten earth is almost certainly capable of planetary terraforming projects, possibly even planetary relocation.

At least Skyline had a plausible resource they wanted to harvest.

yeah, War of the Worlds oversight is huge (in modern terms). When was the story written? My history of science knowledge is bad, but iirc, the germ theory of disease was not accepted until the late 19th/early 20th century.

Well yes, but then again the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was not a typical alien invasion story but the focus is on what happens in the aftermath.

1898. It was a story on the cutting edge of science at the time. Granted in retrospect you wouldn't believe a more advanced group would overlook something like that, but a story needs a logical resolution and what but disease could defeat an alien invasion at the end of the 19th century?

Two other possibilities from movies:

1)They come here simply seeking out other intelligent life. Find the possibility in some places and leave big black monoliths to observe and test.

2)Gold. In Cowboys and Aliens, that's what they wanted, plain and simple. They travel from planet to planet extracting is; it's not just valuable on Earth.

Please aliens, came and take Snooki and as an added bonus, you can have the rest of the Jersey Shores case.

Basically every mineral of value here came from up there. They'd be pretty foolish to ignore all the asteroids, moons and unoccupied planets to come fight a battle here. About the only way I could see that being possible is if you want to say that they're just steamrolling their way through the galaxy harvesting everything in their path.

I would imagine if you can travel between the stars it would be a LOT easier and faster to get it from asteroids anyway. I mean, how much area do you have to search? Looking over an entire planet for some particular metal or something that may be buried far down...

Well, at least the motive for the aliens in the Stargate film seemed logical. Finding a suitable corporeal body to replace your dying one and also abducting humans to provide you with slave labor on another planet so they can mine your valuable Stargate mineral for you.

She definitely has the prerequisite good looks to be one because as we all know, there is no such thing as an unattractive female cylon.

Except having watched them all in things, Katy, Mia, and Zooey look nothing alike EXCEPT for in that picture.

1898? cool! Of course when Verne wrote that they did not have many (if any at all) correct info on how germs would spread! for instance I recall "malaria" (mal aria) simply meant "bad air". They had not yet discovered the plasmodium lifecycle but people knew enough to stay away from warmer, moist areas (if possible) to avoid the disease.

More than one movie, bro. In fact, Earth appears to have acquired a reputation as being the truck stop of the galaxy. Aliens are constantly trying to diddle earth people, genetic incompatibilities notwithstanding. Even the Cylons couldn't seem to decide if they wanted to wipe us out or use us as sex slaves (Sort of ironic really...computers using people for sex. I guess it's their revenge for all the internet porn.)

I hate dumb aliens, too. It staggers the imagination that advanced alien beings would master the formidable technological problem of interstellar space travel and still be unable to land with any degree of proficiency. But they crash their saucers more often than a beta copy of Windows.

They also seem to be oblivious to the fact that you can put some pretty big dents in a planet just by flinging rocks at it from orbit. Only the stupid bugs on Klendathu seemed to figure that one out. Better yet, they appear to have worked out how to fling the rocks all the way across the galaxy with astonishing accuracy while lacking any method of space travel. Wrap your head around that.

But most aliens can't seem to hit people reliably with lasers. LASERS, the greatest aid to weapon accuracy prior to GPS. Maybe it's the helmets.

I suppose the main reason aliens in movies are stupid is because otherwise Earth people would fare just about as well against them as Montezuema did against the Spanish. It'd be exciting, but have kind've a downbeat ending.

Because we are the coolest and most intelligent creatures in the universe.

If Aliens were more intelligent than us then that'd scare people and see them like a threat.
So, show them like they were dumb and problem solved.

They have to be if humans want to win at the end... LOL... but very unrealistic, when you read the story of human history: if aliens decided to invade us with their highly superior technology, it would be fast and efficient... maybe with some resistance pockets quickly reduced to oblivion in a matter of months.

Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen a sci-fi movie where an aggressive alien species invades the Earth, takes it over and either wipes out or enslaves humanity thus giving the movie a dark ending?


The only one I can think of is "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".

The only other story I can think of that's remotely like that was "To Serve Man," and a few other television shows, but that's TV, not a movie.

Battlefield Earth has modern day humanity being basically wiped out by an alien invasion. Then of course 1000 years in the future the remnants of the species manage to come back and win despite having lived in the stone age for 10 generations.

Edit: I'm actually talking about the book. Dunno how they changed the plot for the (terrible) movie adaptation.

Skyline. Well, it ends before any real resolution happens. I can't recall how they end Battle: LA now either...

Oh, in a little nod to that classic SF ep, in Rage there's a book you find lying around called "To Serve Mutant".

I actually managed to last one full hour before I turned off my dvd player in both shock and amusement (mostly stemming from John Travolta's over-acting). It was quite a feat now that I look back on it!

For one it ends early, sometime right after they send the bomb back through the portal and blow up the planet. For another, it was greatly simplified and stripped down. Oh, and the fact that the Psychlos aren't cat-like with full-face masks but Rastafarian basketball players with creepy contact lenses. However, I'd say the film is a study in how a screenplay can stay true to a book but still totally miss the boat. There's really not much I can point to and say "that was the problem"...it's more like just enough was left out and the stuff there was off by just enough to make nothing work.
