Here is a list of sci-fi movies that will be coming out in 2011 as well as some high profile sci-fi movies that are currently shooting and will most likely be out in 2012,
Looking forward to MIB, but on blu-ray. Same with John Carter. Prometheus...gotta see it at opening.
Riddick and Star Trek being 2013, too soon to think about too much.
I wonder if there are any straight-to-video or indie flicks coming worth watching?
Not scifi, but we watched "Atlas Shrugged pt1" last night. I don't think it was in theaters. I'm sure those that have read it would tear it aprat, but I thought it was extremely good. Nice cast, the story kept you moving and didn't stagnate. I'd really like to hear about pt 2 coming this year, but I've heard news both positive and negative about it happening. It's got me wanting to read the book though.
Riddick and prometheus are my favourites out of that lot.
MIB3 may be one to for laughs with the wife.
And, do i need to mention my feeling about star trek...... (cough time travel / cough rediculous captial ship fighter turns, cough hammy downplayed disney acting.... cough), though i may still go and watch it

Atlas Shrugged did have a theatrical release but it was very limited. By the way Raw, did you recognize Graham Beckel in the movie? He played Admiral Cain's XO in BSG. He was Colonel Fisk.

The only ones on the list I'm interested in are Prometheus and John Carter. I wasn't that interested in John Carter, but I just saw it's directed by Brad Bird, who directed WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and A Bug's Life, which were all pretty good, so I'm hoping for the best on this one.

Brad Bird also did a damn fine job with the latest Mission Impossible film.

Sorry, I had the wrong name - it's Andrew Stanton, not Brad Bird. But seeing that a Pixar alum made a successful transition from animation to live action, it raises my hopes even more.

Part 1 got IMO, a bad rap from the industry and the review industry...I think they didn't like it's message for some reason, and since they couldn't attack the message, they instead heaped condemnations on the: movie production "cheap, like a Lifetime movie", and "wooden acting", "stilted dialogue". Well, it's true this wasn't a mega-budget Avatar, nor a vehicle for top tier actors at the peak of their careers...after hearing all the criticisms, then seeing the movie, I can conclude they just plain hated this movie's existence. They wanted to "disappear" this movie.
So there was very little marking done for this, basically a viral campaign among just a handful of politcal blogs. Most of the people who might have been interested, never even heard of the movie. So while the first two weekends went gangbusters for such a low-key film, the dropoff the third weekend was off a cliff: everyone who knew of it, had already seen it once, or even twice. That caused a re-think about sequels, because of the very poor revenue.
I believe that has changed since then. The DVD sales may have been much better. But more than that, I think the producer wanted to do a great big "F U" to those who tried to get rid of it, so it's my understanding he's putting his own money up for the sequels to finish the story. I think that's where it stood just a few months ago.

Not trying to turn this into a PWEC thread but I distinctly remember reading several reviews where the critics dismissed the movie as being "Tea Party propaganda".

Tea Party stuff is still politics, which is what the people disappearing were putting behind them. Much more fun to think of it from a Bioshock point of view. LOL Got it on my Kindle, now I just need to get around to reading it.

So the haters can hate, and those who are interested get another movie.

The "Battleship" film looks moronic to me but maybe I'll be proven wrong?
Yeah, I hope it doesn't turn out like the moronic 'Cowboys and Aliens'! what a waste of good actors and premise in CaA imho.

Battleship and Top Gun 3d are prolly all I'll venture to the theater for.
Top Gun 3D?! cool, this is the first I heard of the update! thanks!

I'm sure Battleship will be dumb, but it may have great FX shots that make it worth a rental.
yeah, I am hoping Liam Neeson can bring something to it to make it at least interesting.

The female lead is a fox, maybe should have had more/any shots of her.
Pity about Ayn Rand, I don't agree with her, but there's a great book in Atlas Shrugged - it just needed to be edited savagely.
(A 70 page speech? Really?)
Well, see it's not really a true "trailer", but rather a "teaser", meant to simply get people knowing that the project is going forward. There's no footage yet for a "trailer" because the principle photography is slated to start in April!
If nothing else, it shows how you can start a feature movie and put it in theatres in under a year.

With no need for FX, that's easily done. It's the extensive post production time needed that makes films take over a year to make. Without it, you can easily spend 3 months prepping, 3 months shooting, and 3 months in post and get a great film made.

Guy Pearce. I liked his work in Memento and bit role in The Road.

Iron Sky looks like huge fun. It is a crowd-funded Finnish production, so it will probably not receive widespread theatrical release. Look for it on Blu-Ray (or whatever). Another couple of interesting recent sci-fi films from overseas that are harder to find, but worth a look, are the Japanese Space Battleship Yamato and Tamil's Endhiran (Robot).
I own a Hindi copy of Endhiran on Blu-Ray, and it is one of the most entertaining movies I have seen in years. My kids went nuts for it. It will probably eventually see an English dub, but is currently tied up in litigation. (Is that getting to be a tired mantra or what?) IF you decide to chase it down, be prepared for a uniquely Bollywood take on sci-fi (Every Bollywood film is very long and very musical). The Hindi Blu-Ray is excellent, although you have to use the 5.1 audio track (The DTS track is missing a channel). I think the Tamil version is fine. From what I hear, the DVD's are only of fair quality, and annoyingly watermarked.

What I find so fascinating about Udo Kier is that he actually has a lot of genuine acting talent but he seems to always end up in B movies. I first noticed him in "Blade".
