Like GrayGhost and BlackSmith said, it's all about discipline. Know when to keep shooting, know when to break-off to reengage or reevaluate.
As I mentioned in response to one of BeachAV8R's AAR's, I use my Vikhrs like they're going out of style to maintain standoff. Mainly against ADA units and even individual MANPAD soldiers (don't waste a missile on the second soldier kneeling on the ground next to the extra missile tubes. Those guys must be the assistant and they never fire on you, but the guy hefting the SA-7/Stinger on his shoulder will @#$% your world up).
Provided that I'm not in some sort of time/distance constraints like providing close support to advancing ground troops, I'll make several treks back to the FARP just to reload Vikhrs. There will be one particular mission late in the Deployment campaign when you don't have that option.
(SPOILER ALERT)
It's a deep attack mission across the Georgian border (not the one with three wingmen, this time you have just one). Thoroughly plan your fire distribution beforehand using the satellite photos and maps in the brief since you're only gonna have 24 Vikhrs at your disposal.
I set up a racetrack pattern at max range of the Vikhrs and launched them one at a time at the ADA's first. The reason I orbitted instead of hovering in one spot is hovering at high altitude will eat up your fuel, and you're gonna be running on fumes on this mission if you're not careful. Usually a speed in the vicinity of 180kmh will give you a low burn rate but still give you plenty of airspeed and power to maneuver.
My first instinct was to start engaging BTR's and such since their machine guns can still shred you fairly quickly, but you need the rest of your Vikhrs to destroy the lines of tanks. And make sure your wingman uses his Vikhrs appropriately too. I ended up handing him individual targets one at a time to ensure he destroyed which ones I wanted, and to make sure we weren't double-tapping anything.
Once you get down to your rockets and guns, you can turn him loose, but try to attack from the opposite direction than your wingman so they can't mass fires on you. Pick out a specific target, and when you get within effective range of your rockets and/or guns, fire one or two salvos/bursts at that one target and then break off before you get too close. It can be tedious but it will keep you from getting chewed up.
If you do elect to fly home (a good distance) for more Vikhrs, by the time you return it will be very dark and your air cover will be long gone. At that point you're gonna need NVG's and adjust your Shkval TV sensor to be able to pick out anything. With any luck the destroyed targets will still be burning and provide illumination, but I wouldn't count on it.
I probably should have just done this as an AAR, but compared to BeachAV8R's, I'd probably just embarress myself, lol.
