Doh! I hand propped a 172 once before when I had an alternator go out which resulted in a dead battery. I had the mechanic hold the brakes and it started.. I wouldn't do it again. With a J-3 or something..yeah.. But not a 172. And to do it alone in an airplane like that is just nuts..

Solo hand propping is the Devil's playground!

Doesn't the 172 have locking brakes? One would think some chalks, a throttle at idle, and a locked brake would have prevented that.

I was reading an NTSB report of a pilot that solo hand propped a Cub with the throttle at max and no chalks - it went 200 yards before striking a building!

In a VW bus, No thanks. Prop would have cut it to ribbons in no time. If he would have caught up in time to catch
the tail. Someone could have had enough time jump in and pull the ignition off.

I`ll bet that poor guy who did it never tried or fly again. Talk about a life lesson that about killed you.
