Greetings all,

Just returned to IL-2 after 5 years absence (has it really been that long?) and installed 4.11 over my brand new 1946 CD (£3.50 at Play.com I think it was!). I’m pretty amazed at the differences, and even my laptop can run it with nearly everything maxed out. A far cry from my old Win98 setup.

I said that I’ve found IL-2 a much improved ‘game’, but there’s always been a couple of things I’ve not been very keen on and they're still around. I wonder if anybody knows if there’s anything in the pipeline that might address these small ‘issues’ I have. Don't get me wrong, they're not killers, but like most people here I would like to see IL-2 continue to grow. It's all personal taste anyway:

1. I’ve always thought it a shame that there’s no pilot! When I look down in the cockpit it would be nice to see a pair of legs and not just a seat; feet on the pedals and an arm and hand moving with the joystick and throttle. Looking to my right in a bomber or a Mosquito for example it would be nice to see a co-pilot. Also, when looking up from a bombardier position it would be good to see a human form and not just an empty chair! A bit disconcerting. Generally it would be nice to have crew. This could always be an option that could be turned on and off and would also give scope for those who like to dabble in flight suits and such.

2. When an engine gets hit it tends to stop rotating instantaneously. If this happened in real life the reverse torque would rip the engine straight out of its mountings! General sounds of destruction and a more leisurely grinding to a halt would be more rewarding. Nothing like the sound of expensive machinery destroying itself!

On another note, I was wondering if it’s necessary or even a good idea to install the latest DGEN over 4.11. If so where can I get it and how do I do it? As I said I’ve been away a while. It took me 3 attempts to get STAB to work!

Last but not least; is there a good sound pack out there that works with 4.11 and won’t screw up any future updates? The sounds in IL-2 – especially the engine sounds – have always been a bit pale.

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

1. Ugh. I'd hate to see avatar legs and arms and stuff when I look around the cockpit. And it's unnecessary polygons that have to be rendered. I have too many aircraft for FS9 and FSX that have these "fake" pilots, and to me, they always TAKE AWAY not ADD to the experience.

I'm sitting in my chair flying the plane. I don't need MORE stuff in the way of seeing instruments, out the cockpit, etc.

2. You'd be surprised how fast a prop will stop spinning. I think the game exaggerates a bit, but not too much.

As far as Dgen is concerned, you'd be better off with the latest one possible. There will be a even newer and improved one soon as someone in Russia was able to locate Starshoy and talk him into giving him the source code. But for now, go to Mission4today.com, start an account and you should be able to download a newer DGEN there. I have the newest one out now and it works great. If you want to keep track of that later DGEN coming out, go here.

Thanks guys. I guess tastes differ. And no, I wouldn't be surprised at how fast a prop stops, but I would be surprised if it stayed in the airframe!

Cheers

If you decide you want to try flying with an online co-op group have a look at us at www.raf-65.com.

As for D-Gens, I would recommend checking out DCG by Lowengrin.
