You would think that lowering the landing gear would just be impossible to forget. But there are so many instances every year. When I was preparing to buy an aircraft, one of the things I looked at was insurance and maintenance. Insurance is more than twice as high for retractable gear as for fixed gear. Maintenance costs much higher as well. Unless you have some kind of system behind you financing your flying, fixed gear is the way to go.

Which one of our members (I think it was an admin) hit the go around lights while they were in the service because a plane was coming in without its gear deplyed?

I can't count the number of times I have made what I thought was the perfect approach in a sim only to find out after I landed that I forget to deploy the landing gear. You don't have anywhere near the task overload problem in a sim either.

Damn, I knew I forgot to do something, poor #%&*$#. It does happen tho as others have said, task over load and stuff. I like in falcon on short final, check gear down. I can not tell you in a sim how many times I said oops thanks for the reminder, lol.

Simulated engine out (I think) - a bit task saturated. Taking some instruction from the instructor. Little high and tight on the pattern, but better that than low and short on a simulated engine out. Nice little forward slip base to final turn to bleed off some of that altitude and airspeed.
That HORN is really annoying..but nevermind!
Alright..ease her up.. Nice flare.. Get her on the ground cognizant of your remaining runway. If you have a chance you could even kill the mixture in the flare. Hold her off.. Hold her off... Hold... Hold..
Oh... THAT horn...

Beach, I'll call that one the instructor's fault . . .
Amazing how people can get so fixated on a task that something as glaringly obvious as that horn can go unnoticed. I remember interviews with Vietnam Phantom pilots who said similar things - that their RIO would call out a Mig or missile and the pilot never heard it.
Of course, I also heard interviews where the pilots said one of the first items they added to their checklist was to turn off the speaker for the backseater too . . .
When my dad had his Bonanza he very nearly made a gear up landing ONCE. He was slightly distracted by pattern traffic, a fairly good cross-wind, and a talkative friend who was flying with him. I always made a point to check for 'three green' on final when I flew with him.
Saw a guy Q-tip his props at the local airport in a Beech Duchess once. He realized his gear weren't down and firewalled the throttles, but still managed to mangle both props. He did make it around and landed it gear down, but that was one expensive 'oops'.
