I'm considering a new Core i3 laptop. I want it to have 8GB of RAM and be as small as possible. The Dell Inspiron line fits the bill the best, and they offer an Inspiron 14R with a 14-inch screen, 2.3 GHz Core i3, and 4GB of RAM, for $500.

I wanted to find out if the laptop comes with 2x 2GB of RAM or 1x4GB. 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory modules are $18 each on Newegg right now, so it's not a huge expense to buy 1 or 2 of them, but it would be nice to know. Here is the chat transcript with Dell. Note that it took 25 minutes to get my answer, complete with salesperson BS, and that she kept rambling on afterwards...

Hi. I am considering purchasing an Inspiron 14R laptop with 4GB of RAM

2:13:34 PM Joe Keefe
The memory spec is listed as 4GB Single Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz

2:13:48 PM Joe Keefe
can you tell me if this is a single 4GB SODIMM or 2 2GB SODIMMs?

2:14:05 PM Merriam V
yes they do

2:14:20 PM Merriam V
but in a limited stocks

2:14:31 PM Joe Keefe
I didn't ask a yes or no question

2:15:55 PM Joe Keefe
I want to know if an Inspiron 14R with 4GB RAM comes with a single SODIMM that has a capacity of 4GB, or if the memory comes 2x2GB

2:17:09 PM Merriam V
let me look fo your system

2:17:14 PM Merriam V
pls hold on

2:19:25 PM Merriam V
can you enlighten me Joe about the usage of this computer for you]

2:19:42 PM Joe Keefe
what would you like to know?

2:20:30 PM Merriam V
Aside from emailing, web browsing, what else do you plan in using the system for?

2:21:17 PM Joe Keefe
The system will primarily be used as a portable alternative to my desktop for Sibelius professional music notation software

2:21:46 PM Joe Keefe
a dual-core i3 and 4GB of RAM will be sufficient for this purpose and I'm looking for something small, so the 14R is a good fit

2:22:24 PM Joe Keefe
I'm not sure why my usage affects the answer to whether there is one stick of memory or two

2:24:05 PM Merriam V
How much are you willing to spend for the system?

2:25:09 PM Joe Keefe
$500, which is what it costs...

2:26:00 PM Merriam V
cool

2:26:02 PM Joe Keefe
but only if it has one stick of 4GB memory

2:26:09 PM Joe Keefe
it's a simple question...

2:29:55 PM Joe Keefe
Are you there, Merriam?

2:31:41 PM Merriam V
the computer will have a built in memory card

2:31:46 PM Merriam V
or module

2:31:56 PM Joe Keefe
right - just one?

2:32:09 PM Merriam V
but you can use an external USB or memory stick

2:32:11 PM Joe Keefe
that would mean that there is an expansion slot for an additional memory module

2:32:34 PM Joe Keefe
OK, let's back up

2:32:48 PM Joe Keefe
typically Dell laptops have slots for two memory modules

2:33:03 PM Joe Keefe
does the current Inspiron 14R model have two memory module slots?

2:34:17 PM Merriam V
yes there are two slots for the memory module

2:34:46 PM Joe Keefe
and does the current Inspiron 14R, when shipped with 4GB of RAM, fill one or both of those slots?

2:35:57 PM Merriam V
it can come standard with 2 2GB memory modules

2:36:24 PM Joe Keefe
is there a way to get it with 1 4GB module and one open slot?

2:36:57 PM Merriam V
that is not part of the configuration process Joe

2:37:24 PM Joe Keefe
ok; thank you

2:37:24 PM Merriam V
we cannot specify how many memory slots should be occupied

2:38:22 PM Merriam V
we have a package under $500

2:39:12 PM Joe Keefe
The Inspiron 15?

2:40:42 PM Merriam V
we also have and Inspiron 15R with the starting price of $499.99

2:41:09 PM Joe Keefe
right - I want the smallest laptop available for a low price and a Core iX processor, so the 14R is a better fit for me

2:41:37 PM Merriam V
that is correct

2:41:57 PM Merriam V
the screen size is only 14.0" measured diagonally

2:42:47 PM Merriam V
and weight is only 343.00 mm (13.50 inches)

2:43:07 PM Merriam V
sorry that is the width

2:43:20 PM Merriam V
weight is less than 2.27 kg (5.01 lb)

2:43:24 PM Joe Keefe
yep, that's what I want

2:44:13 PM Merriam V
would you like me to save a system in your customer profile now Joe

2:44:21 PM Joe Keefe
no, that's OK

2:44:33 PM Merriam V
Do you have any other concerns before I let you go?

2:44:37 PM Joe Keefe
no

2:45:18 PM Merriam V
Our Chat team strives to provide the very best levels of customer service. My manager gets all the feedback and we use it to help our customers. Thank you for choosing Dell's Sales Chat and have a wonderful day!

2:45:18 PM Merriam V
May I ask a very small thing from you? Would you be so kind as to answer my survey? I would appreciate it so much coming from you.

2:45:25 PM Joe Keefe
sure

2:45:39 PM Merriam V
Thank you! Thank you!
This would really make my day as this is VERY important for me =)

2:45:49 PM Merriam V
Please Click the “EXIT” button and NOT “X”, for you to be able to answer the survey for me. Thank You. (be sure to disable the pop-up blocker C”,) It has been a pleasure!

She was awfully excited about receiving negative feedback...

Anyway, at this point I have no idea what to expect (1 or 2 DIMMs) so I'll just wait until I receive it and crack it open then. What a waste of time...

why would it be listed as SINGLE CHANNEL if its 2 Sticks.? 2 Sticks would be running in dual channel mode.

Just buy 2 4GB sticks, and remove their crap ram when you get it.. easy.

Yeah, you would think... That's one of the reasons I don't trust the chat answer I got.

Funny you say that, I just an hour ago got done with support chat for a failed port replicator. It was totally painless. I told them the laptop wouldn't power up using the button on the replicator, they asked if I'd tried it elsewhere, I said yes it's working fine on a borrowed replicator, they said "ok, we'll send a new one."

Odd they'd put the lesser people in sales. Yours was so following-the-script as to be irritating.

I was just waiting for them to offer to upgrade the RAM. I was looking forward to letting them know I could get it for $18 somewhere else.

Laptop arrived yesterday. As suspected, there is 1 stick of 4GB memory in there. I just ordered another from Newegg.

The installed memory is by "Nanya". Never heard of that, but all is working well and the 5400 RPM hard drive is usually the limiting factor in a budget laptop system anyway...

Nanya is a big OEM memory manufacturer. I've bought that brand memory in Austin from one of the local mom and pop computer stores years ago.
