Ok its friday night , a warm summers evening in sydney. After a bottle of new zealand sav. blanc, my wife in the other room, i'm listening to early Led Zep. ( after Rattlesnake Guitar - the music of Peter Green), I got to thinking.

1/ There are so many posters here with different, but great musical tastes, what we need is a forum to discuss music as well as Sims, what do you think?

2/ Riffs that stick like mud in your brain, ill start from what I was listening to tonight

1/ Oh well - fleetwood Mac
2/ Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
3/ Long way to the Top - ACDC
4/ Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
5/ Missisippi Queen - Mountain

and from left field

6/ 21st century Schitzoid Man - King Crimson

The other thing I realised tonight is that how many of my rock/blues "heroes" have passed away in the last few years eg Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher etc

Im feeling blessed to have listened and or seen them in my lifetime.

I am going back to my youth in my current listening

eg Quicksilver messenger service, Mountain ( eg Nantucket Sleighride), Grand Funk Railroad, Vanilla Fudge,Procol Harum, Free, Wishbone Ash, Pink Floyd, Yes etc

So lets share our musical tastes. Nothing is wrong or right, we are who we listen to.

Limelight by Rush - opening riff
Tom Sawyer by Rush - opening synth sweep
Roundabout by Yes - opening guitar volume swell and harmonics riff
Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple - opening riff . . . well, most of the song's riff
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin - opening riff, although the first note is enough to identify it
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin - opening riff

I could go on, but I don't wanna use everyone else's ideas! biggrin

PS. - one for the drummers - Message in a Bottle (edit: some live versions only) by The Police - opening drum flams (might be mistaken for opening flams of Driven to Tears also by The Police)

Okay, one more drum opening - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by The Police - opening hi-hat by Stewart Copeland, who single handedly made the hi-hat cymbal a more famous drum feature

Message in a Bottle from the Synchronicity concert recorded at now non-existant the Atlanta Omni

Driven to Tears (excellent older live version)

...and since "guitar" isn't specified, there's one everyone knows.

I love the opening guitar riff for "Day Tripper" and the opening bass and lead guitar riff for "I Feel Fine",

That 30 Best vid is a pretty good representation! Personally, I think that as much as I have griped in the past about pop trash, we have seen the growth of a pretty darn good catalogue of rock-n-roll / rock music . . . and all of the other permutations thereof.

recorded in August and released in October 1969. The darkest, loudest prog. riff ever in my opinion.

This rendition live, a number of years later.

Bands such as Tool, etc list this as their start of their journey into metal when they first heard when young.

Here is a "modern version"

The album came out before the first Black Sabbath album, which is seen today as the birth of heavy Metal.

King Crimson were more a unique combination of Rock, Jazz and progressive.

From the same album something completely different ( remember this stuff was written 42 years ago). The singer is Greg Lake who loined ELP after the release of this album
