Confirmed in that Subsim thread that even without an internet connection you can play offline. The option is in the Uplay launcher itself.

I´m thinking of buying SH5 now. But I have read a lot of bad old reviews.
Is SH5 playable now?

Misty, SH5 is playable only if you are willing to put in some time to install mods that fix or provide work-arounds for certain things. It still bothers me that something as basic as a working echolot was never provided by the developer. I mean it is there, but when you attempt to ask the navigator to give you a depth reading, you get nothing. Certain missions that take you through shallow waters really need this. If you are a real hardcore fan of uboot simulations, then go to Subsim.com and look at the SH5 Mods Workshop and do a little reading so you don't install mods you don't really need.

So is SH4 still the better game or SH5 managed somehow to steal the crown? I'm still pondering whether to buy this or not.

You have a point. But if SH4 is still better I won't play it anyway.

After all those years, hours of tactical gameplay, and having played SHIII, SHIV and SHV. I kept a Falcon Mach V from upgrading to remain on XP and the only active programm on that machine is SHIII GWX + SH3 Commander + mods.

I found the game play, replayability and entertaining level superior for SHIII to any other SHXX despite its 7 years old engine and core flaws.

Moreover, still new mods are created for it. 7 years after it's inception, it is still alive and kicking!...It is a classic as a "1965 29 Riva Super Aquarama" can be!

SHIV and SHV did not add much but better graphics, some different physics, and different machines and theaters of Op., and no revolutionay concepts or improvments over SHIII. Graphics in a Sub can be useless at times. Consider "Dangerous Waters" with its simplistic graphics, the best modern Naval Warfare simulation available to the public (with Harpoon of course), yet their graphics are not what I would call a "First price of Advanced graphics technology and innovation" by today's standards.
