Hi Guys.

I've been trying to find a model of a typical German WWII control tower.

This is a model I found, of what is reportedly a German WWII era control tower, although it's been modernized with radar.

As I have no information on these buildings, except this model, do you think this building will look good enough to use in place of the Airfix control tower we have for UK bases?

See if you can get hold of Stickman over at the a2a forums in the battle of britain section, the guy has a wealth of information about airfields and the like , if he cant help you i dont think anyone can smile The main thing with Stickman is historical accuracy which is what i was looking for when i first got in touch with him early in the year.Excellent fellow smile

A2A

there is also a briliant forum about ww2 british and lufty bases that has a lot of pics of towers and emplacements , layouts etc if you dig into the net a bit, i also found a very good historical britain website that had a dedicated section to ww2 gun emplacements, airfields and more, i will see if i can dig out the links..there is enough pics and info ion those sites to keep you going for the next ten years.

Guys.

I'm happy to say, I found the picture the model was based on. Sadly my German is not up to much, and Babel-fish turns out gibberish, so could someone translate please?

Well, it's Sperenberg airfield, and just as luck would have it, Sperenberg was one of only two airfields built by the Russians in the 50's! So this control tower is of Russian design, not Luftwaffe. frown

That was a waste of time then!

Then I found this one. built by the Luftwaffe?

I've found photos of fuel bowsers and starter carts. The only actual airfield shots with buildings I'vd found are recon photos from 10,000 plus feet.

Based on my above picture. I've scratch built a Luftwaffe Control Tower.

It still needs a bit of fitting out. but the basic model is finished.

I hope one of out skinners might camo it, or at least weather it, because all the textures I used were new, or lifted from the photo. wink

Well Guys.

After spending far more hours researching Luftwaffe Control Towers, I think I can safely say there is no generic type, unlike the RAF Airfix type. So I'm either going to have to build 255 different ones, or stick with the one above, which is at least a stand alone type. Quite a few German fields had a tower stuck on top of the hangers, or on top of a office, which for the purposes of EAW is not that good. I'm going to finish off this Towers and send it off to Pobs, and post a copy to replace the current one.
