I just wanted to get an idea of who is playing past the free month. I subbed for 3 months and am quite happy with the game, but from the internet it seems that some people absolutely hated it.

I just wanted to get an idea of who is playing past the free month. I subbed for 3 months and am quite happy with the game, but from the internet it seems that some people absolutely hated it. I have to play at least to level 50 or the end of the main story line, so no less than another month. It's true that I am missing out on alot of the multiplayer enjoyment, but this is like two games in one (SP and MP) and I am having a blast by myself. Well, I did group a couple of times and kept wishing it was a group of SimHQ folks with voice comms. Maybe some more will join later and I will start a new character so I can "grow" with them at the same pace. As I might have mentioned before, the amount of fun I am having makes it worth the price of the game and at the very least two months of subscription. BTW, I am keeping my little post updated in the other thread here titled " Star Wars: The Old Republic Friend Club."

I heard there are separate story lines for each of the classes/sides, so it's like a new game for each one. If it take you ~2 months to do one, that implies it would take close to a year to do them all if you wanted to.
I'm interested to know what the negative reaction has centered around. Too simple? Too shallow? Too much like other MMOs/not enough like other MMOs? Other than here and a couple of fleeting threads on Blue's News I've not really heard anything about player reactions.

Nope. Got bored before my 30 days were up.
Nothing to do with the game being bad just I get bored of MMO's and shouldn't have bought this one but I never learn!

The main source of vitriol I have seen is MMORPG.com. The gripes range from not being Star Wars galaxies 2.0, to being a WoW clone, to simple space combat, to giving founders titles to people that sub for at least one month. Basically many posters there are throwing as much mud as possible and hoping something sticks.

I'll probably continue playing for another month until my character gets to level 50 just to see the content. After that I'm done as, even though I'm on a PvP server, it really is a simplistic game at this point. I might come back and play later in the year if the PvP content gets fleshed out some.

Interesting. Makes me wonder what people see in MMOs period. I've never seen any appeal, but obviously millions of others feel different. Yet then many complain and defect for the same reasons I never play them at all?

If you are not going to continue playing, why do you care about a silly title? Still playing, up to level 39 on my sage, Master Hyena Stormbreaker. Having a good time, but annoyed with people in groups who dont ask questions and/or pull multiple groups of mobs. Havent let a tank die yet, but I have sacrificed some of the idiot dps. The pvp warfronts are nice, I like huttball and the landing party one with the turrets, but I hate the assault/defend map. Ill give it another month to see how the lvl50 content is, if it sucks, back to skyrim and a short wait for mass effect3

I am still playing and will be for some time.
My only real gripe is I paid for a game that has high res textures as shown off in all screenshots and videos by Bioware and what I got was blurry medium res textures that really look like crap and something that should be in a game from 2001 not 2012.

I heard there are separate story lines for each of the classes/sides, so it's like a new game for each one. If it take you ~2 months to do one, that implies it would take close to a year to do them all if you wanted to. Each class has its own storyline that spans the entire game. So that's 8 unique stories. All the other quests like the storyline for a particular planet are shared by the same faction, so they are totally different for Empire and Republic. So there is a a good bit of repetition leveling up two characters in the same faction. That said, many quests will play out differently depending on whether you make Dark Side or Light Side choices, so they're worth doing multiple times. It's also worth pointing out that you probably won't complete all of the side quests for each character, if you try to do everything you'll end up way over leveled. I'm interested to know what the negative reaction has centered around. Too simple? Too shallow? Too much like other MMOs/not enough like other MMOs? Other than here and a couple of fleeting threads on Blue's News I've not really heard anything about player reactions.
Too easy, just a WoW clone, etc. The game did ship with some fairly annoying bugs (high detail textures still don't work, no AA support, some settings don't save correctly or randomly reset, etc) and is missing some features that are pretty standard for MMOs (no ability to customize the UI). Most of those problems are in line to be fixed... and personally I'm playing for the story, not to do raid grinding or whatever. I signed up for a 6 month sub.

I want to be still playing, but real life has poked its head in and killed my free time. But it's one of those good real life things, nothing bad, so I'm not complaining. But I am still subbed and plan to be for a while yet. Was only able to get one character to 22 before life exploded awesome everywhere.

I'm still on. It's fun with a good story though there's a a lot more people than average that don't quite seem to know how MMOs work. So, there's a goodly amount of guys pulling multiple mobs, attacking before everyone's ready, etc.
We really need a Sim HQ guild.

If you need to "know how MMOs work" to play it, then I can say confidently they failed to live up to their promise. This was supposed to be the SW MMO for people who don't know/like MMOs. If it's that much like WoW, then it's obvious they cared more about luring those players over than tapping the large group of those who don't care for those kinds of games.

It does work as an entry for non-MMO people. The solo questing, pvp and storylines are well done. You can play the entire game without ever grouping with another person. Its when the group dynamic rears its head that the first-timers have issues. Grouping requires a little patience and working with others (duh). Some of the newbies are treating it as the easy solo content and wiping their groups. As a healer, Ive had a number of these guys run off from the party or pull groups that we are not ready to engage. After letting them die, I kindly inform them to stick with the group and attack the mobs the tank hits first. All goes well after that. They just dont know any better. But that is a basic MMO grouping law. All MMOs are gonna have that and there is no way to fix that. You either play as a team or you play skyrim, either way, you might take one to the knee.

If this game had an offline mode that allowed you to play the storyline and did not have to pay the monthly sub, then I would've bought it and played it. I don't like paying subs though so I passed on this one.

I don't have enough experience in MMO games to judge this game against other MMOs, but I hope that fans of Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect (1+2) will realize that SWTOR plays very much the same way except with CO-OP. Most of the MP critique that I have seen seems to stem from people that want SWTOR to be like other MMOs. I view this game like a fun RPG (like Mass Effect) that also has great CO-OP support. You might view the monthly subscription as a downside, but I am getting my money's worth just playing this as a SP RPG.

letterboy, what's bugging me is that you have to buy this game at full game price PLUS pay for a monthly sub as well. If it were free to download and just monthly sub, that's fine. Or pay for the game for 60-90 days free time, or even better, free SP and just start subbing once you do MP. I am familiar with KOTOR and I loved and finished both ME games so I do know the gameplay/storytelling is good... I just can't see myself paying and paying and paying especially since my gaming time is mostly occupied with flight sims.
World of Tanks is a free-to-play game, with in-game gold used to purchase additional perks like faster XP and cash gain, ability to transfer XP from one tank to another, etc. It has an optional monthly sub too, for a few gold. I do not pay for the sub since I play it just a few days a week, but I have so far invested £90 in this game for the perks. At least I am not pressured to play often because I'm paying for a sub.

Here's the thing Ice- WoT is a purely death match pvp game. All they really have to do in terms of development is making new tanks and maps...
TOR OTOH has (if you count raids and everything in the game) probably at least 6-8 times as much content as KOTOR.

Let me add to what Speedo said and point out that not only is there a boat-load of content in SWTOR, it is also a matter of how masterfully it is presented with cut scenes, good voice acting, and a story line. Multiply that times the variations that can play out depending on the class of character you choose and the path you take (light or dark) and there is no way any developer can make this available without a hefty up-front price. And don't forget the Lucas Arts licensing on top of all that. Also, I imagine that there is a much longer line of investors waiting for an initial return on SWTOR than there is for World of Tanks. For this level of entertainment from an exclusive franchise like Star Wars, I'd say that the price is justified. That's coming from a non-MMO person who is utterly engrossed in this game.

Point taken, and I would gladly pay for £70 Collector's Edition. What I can't take is the monthly sub. Without the sub, I can take one month or one year to finish ONE STORYLINE in this game -- cost = £70. With the sub = £70+£££££.

Didn't play past the beta times and I didn't buy it. I think I am done with those types of games; since I have uninstalled all my FPS type games as well. Flight sims or nothing for me unless its Rome Total War and the mods for it.

I'm still playing. I have a level 26 Sith warrior and level 20 Jedi. We should definitely start a SimHQ guild. Let me know the server and I'll start a character there.

I've tried with little interest to pick a server and get going.
Pick a server, pick a side, and I'll join you.

Level 50 Sith Juggernaut(Drogo) on Iron Citadel. 7 other characters ranging from 31 to 19. Same server. In an active guild that pvp's and does pve from flashpoints to operations together. I have 6 real life friends in it also. Come, join the Dark Side. I will help you if you need help. PM me to let me know you are on the server.

I played since more or less the week of the game release. Played Sentinel on republic side. Server was normal type population when I started playing. I like the story part of the game. It's basically kotor3 with mmo mixed in.
But maybe it's a bit too easy. Space missions alone will get you a whole level worth of xp even at like lvl 40. Hit level 50 like 2 weeks ago. Grindinded the daily missions which gives out like 150k in cash and day and commendations for gear. In 2 weeks worth of raids and hard mode flash point, I pretty much have almost all of the Columi raid gear. Dailies give out a lot of money and there is absolutely nothing worth while to spend your money on because raid gear is free and fairly easy to get. Crafting is absolutely broken. I nothing much left to do over than keep doing the raids in hard mode for Rakaa version which is slight upgrade to Columi gear.
Other than that all that is left to do is to level alts and I am not really interested in at. Notice the server population has dropped drastically. End Game planets have like less than 5 people on most nights. Even the republic fleet has like 15 people on. Only thing saving us is the guild is fairly large and that is allowing us to get things done.
But I don't feel too optimistic about the games staying power.

I am playing on Jung Ma which is an East Coast RP-PVP Server. I am going to play each class up to getting out of the newbie areas so it's like level 10 or 11 and then will decide on my main. I am playing Empire.
So far I have ....
Destructis - Bounty Hunter Blasphamous - Sith Inquisitor

I'm on Rubat Crystal (PvE RP). Oddly enough my gaming style in this online game has tended to lend itself more to single player action laced with the occasional (and casual) " will you group and help me" episode. Not sure how I would fare in a more "serious" guild environment - probably get kicked out for not being serious enough. I'm a level 49 Jedi Consular (Republic) working on finishing up business on Corellia and then finding out what is on planet Ilum. I guess that means I'm basically done with the storyline. Might start another character - if I do it will have to be one with a light saber of some kind because that's the whole reason for me!

Not sure how I would fare in a more "serious" guild environment - probably get kicked out for not being serious enough. There are all different types of guilds. If you decide to join one, tell them what you want, for example your play style, not being serious, etc. I have played MMO's for years and been in every type of guild you can think of. The ones I had been in the longest was more a family type of guild. You help each other out with things. For example some of the dungeon quests, crafting and things like that. It's just very laid back and relaxed. Lots of give and take in a guild like that.
