I read about this a long time ago, so it might not apply (or memory may be failing...which is most probable), but if I remember correctly:

Copy BIOS image file (from ASUS) to USB flash drive root.

Connect to PC.

Boot PC.

Pray.

Found the article from ASUS

http://support.asus.com/Search/KDetail.aspx?SLanguage=en&no=1722&t=1

(yes, I was right)

Quote:
To recover the BIOS from a USB flash disk.
a.) Insert a USB flash disk that contains the BIOS file to the USB port.
b.) Turn on the system.
c.) The utility will automatically checks the devices for the BIOS file. When found, the utility reads the BIOS file and starts to flash the corrupted BIOS file.
d.) Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process.
( Note : DO NOT shut down or reset the system while updating the BIOS! Doing so can cause system boot failure! )
( Note : The recovered BIOS may not be the latest BIOS version for this motherboard. Visit the ASUS website www.asus.com to download the latest BIOS file. )

5-Beeps indicates CPU according to Asus:
Quote:
1.4.2.3 CPU issue: Beep (5 short)
A. Check whether the CPU is in our CPU support list
B. Check whether there are any damagers of your CPU or CPU socket.
C. .Check whether the CPU fan is correctly connected
D. Check whether the ATX_12V power cable is connected well
E. If possible try to test with another CPU

well according to the lights on the mobo that indicate which component is malfunctioning the memory light is the only one that comes on and stays lit..

But since I did a BIOS UPgrade and screwed that up I doubt it is any of the components unless when I restarted the PC it fried something..

I have NO Other PC to test these components on so I am not sure what to do about that..I also puled the CPU that looked fine and reseated it.. I aslso pulled the memory and that looked ok..I didnt here or smell any smoke so I dont think it is the CPU , memory or vid card..

I also am getting 5 beeps followed by 4 more but aa a different tone..I am going to look that up but welcome any ideas on how to get the BIOS restored??

try booting with 1 ram stick in the slot farthest from the CPU.

I've had two failed BIOS Updates in my history of PCs (~20 Years) (yeah Im only 27/28).

1 failed as a result of a power outtage A Long time ago, the other the iso was messed up (3 years ago).

the one from a while back was a simple fix, order the BIOS Chip from Company, pull the old one out, pop the new one in the socket. (gotta love them Award 486DX2 BIOS's)

the other i applied for an RMA, and it was declined as they clearly stated in the manual and on the website that flashing the bios was not covered under warranty.

So, I had to re-instate the bios manually using another PC,
A 16 Pin Socket -> USB board that I had to build from Radio Shack parts and a Kit I had already($3 Max, $1.99 for the socket in 2009), put the ship on the socket, windows saw it as a 8 MB (removable storage), used a USB Flash Write program to write the BIN file to the ROM, unplug USB from other system, pull the chip off the socket, place back on mainboard, boot reset the CMOS to wipe the configuration errors, and re-flash to get a Valid flash crc stamp. (to remove the Invalid BIOS error).

Sending it back would have been easier, but the company was being a bunch of bummers,
in the end it saved me $$ as I didnt have to pay for shipping.

Ya this is the first time I ever had a failed BIOS!! Real Bummer..

But what is funny is that ASUS has supposed to be anyhow, when the BIOS Flash goes bad a way to recover the bios which did not work.. I was supposed to be able to recover BIOS by inserting a Flash drive or the original DVD that had the ROM File that with the Mobo and it was supposed to read that and restore the BIOS.. NOT!!

Well the damn thing did not even get to see the keyboard let alone a flash or DVD Rom Drive.. it just insisted on ONLY Letting some beeps and a rather strange coe at that.. it beeped 4 - 1 - 4 then 5 and that was it..

OH well I am hoping they can repair it and it will be under warranty as I am planning on getting another 480GTX, So I hope I will NOT have to buy a New mobo..

Well I got the board back and it appears that the RAM is Bad?? on this model board it had LED Lights that can indicate a problem with individual components like the CPU, GPU, RAM..

and the RAM Led stays lit after a series of beeps..I am hoping ONLY the RAM is bad and NOT the CPU too but that light goes off??

but in the beep sequence it is 4-1-4 then 5.. wierd wish I knew what that sequence ment?? any BIOS Experts here??

I am going to goto the local PC Shop and get a RAM Module for cheap and test to see if I can get it too post.. I will at least find out if the CPU is toast as well..

I uploaded the Audio as recorded by Eagle-Flight and I whilest discussing my problem.. the beeps sart at about 10 seconds in:

http://www.mediafire.com/?jzfphfrg49f31a2

it appears the code is 4-1-3-5

EDIT: I checked the PC with another PSU it still gives me the same code.. I have till wait till Monday morning to get a 2nd lvl tech to go any further with this.. But I beleive the MotherBoard was not even fixed and is the cause of my problems....

The Tech Guy was trying to say since I did NOT buy RAM from the QVL I will NOT be able to recieve help.. Well I told him that is a load of BS and it worked fine till I did the BIOS Update.. it was probally their Faulty BIOS that bricked my board..

has anyone ever heard of that you MUST buy the RAM in the QVL??

WEll I will have to wait till Monday to get the 2nd lvl tech I just hope for their sake they help if not well they are just asking for trouble.. I am sick and tired of crap these corporations pull after the sale..

I will NOT get angry and yell i do thngs today profesionally and in a mild manner.. I will just take action accordingly and go to Corporate..

I still think it is the mobo but hey if this is what it is going to take to show Asus he Board is still Bricked so be it.. at the rate this is costing me money I almost could have bought a new Mobo.. lol!!

OK took it too the Shop yesterday and the Guy told me it was definetely the Mobo good thing was he did NOT charge me. So I asked him if he had this board in stock he went and looked and did NOT have the mobo in stock..

Well Ltr that night I decided to just go ahead and buy a new Mobo.. Well after I got home and connected it all up it booted up NP's.. So it appeared it was in Fact the mobo that was at fault..

WEll know all is left is to get this other board squared away with Asus.. So in a couple hours I will call Asus Tech and get an RMA and hopefully they will just replace it with a new board.. As it is obvious they did NOthing the last time and the board is unrepairable by Asus..

Wish me luck... wink

Wish me luck... wink

they prolly just booted it using external BIOS, noted that it booted fine and put it back in the box.

yes I have heard from another that is proablly what they might have done..

It appears they are going to send me a new board since I already sent in the Boad for a first RMA.. I qualify to get a new board..

I just have to wait till I get the Shipping label then send the pahage and once I get the Tracking Number I give it too Asus Tech Support once they see the package is in Transit they will ship me a new board..

I had already bought a new board so if it is a new Board I will try and sell it either here or on ebay..

Well I jumped the gun and shipped the mobo off on my dime after I did that the next day I get the PrePaid Label.. But that is NOT really the issue they now after they stated I Qualify for another Board. Well I called back and the tech guy said they Had NO Boards of the same make in their inventory and I will NOT be getting a new board..

Well he stated they will try and repair the old board. So I just said OK and was done there.. I will wait and see if and what they will come up next as I feel they are trying their best to discourage me and NOT honor Their Warranty..

WEll that is fine I will be writing a letter to the Asus President and see what that leads too..

Should have them leave a note on your RMA case # about the BIOS issue etc, and tell them to BOOT TEST IT running by itself w/ CPU & RAM, and no External BIOS.

I'd Also ask for them to refund my shipping cost (was like $13?), i pay like $5 for eastern half of the US, and Items to Usually goto California and those are like $9 (Business account w/ UPS), just login, enter shipping info, print label and give it to the UPS guy when he does my daily delivery at my studio.
