Does anyone know of any good films that have been made that were based on the battle?

The Horatio Hornblower series took place much later, right?

HH started before Trafalgar, Nelson gets quite a few mentions but Trafalgar has never been mentioned in the series. The last episode of the TV series is in the lead up to Trafalgar and setting the scene for it, He got command of HMS Hotspur in 1803, but as I have never read the books I'm not sure if he actually fights at Trafalgar.

Great people, these Brits ! but I frankly wonder what would England do now without having the Napoleonic war and the 100 years war (in spite they've actually lost the latter one) in its history...went into bookshops in London last summer,in their history section, half of the books sold there were about Ajincourt (that whe call Azincourt in France) , Waterloo or Trafalgar.

I love the books, FAR better than the TV series.

Forester's last, unfinished Hornblower book, H and the Crisis involves Hornblower in the events leading directly to Trafalgar, but don't know if he would have fought in the battle itself.

Just read a synopsis on Kindle, I think I will queue it up and have a read once I have got through the current backlog of books to read.
Thanks.

It's not just the Brits. If you go to any bookstore in the US and visit the military history section, you'll notice that over 50% of the books will be either WWII or US Civil War. smile

In the series, Hornblower wasn't present at the battle, but at one point he is tasked with organizing Nelson's funeral in London.

I Remember Nelson, episode 4. All shot on a lower gun deck, no exteriors. Still worth watching, as the panoramic shots so beloved of 19th century painters did not depict the battle as 80%+ of the men there saw it.

The whole series is well worth watching, and is NetFlix (I think). Nelson is played by Kenneth Colley, who was an admiral in The Empire Strikes Back.

Thanks for the info and I will definitely add it to my Netflix queue. Kenneth Colley is a very good actor. I enjoyed his work in "Firefox" as well as of course Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

There were I think 123 Americans numbered among the crew of the Victory so there must have been quite a few scattered about other vessels in Nelsons fleet not all of them pressed men as at least one was down as a midshipman, oddly enough there were a number of French and Spanish sailors as well.
There is a casualty list of all those killed in the battle somewhere on the net went through it once but have never been able to find it again, there are some for individual ships that can be located via Google.

My mother's side of the family is from Spain and my dad's side is from Italy so if I had any ancestors at Trafalgar they were on the losing side. biggrin

23, according to the Intertubes. The RN at Trafalgar had about 1400 foreign sailors altogether, including some Frenchmen and Spaniards! Some of these were escaped slaves from various parts, and there were even some Chinese. One wonders what their stories were!

Here is a documentary about it that I just located:
