Agreed. Last two folks my company hired were the boyfriend of CEO's daughter (love to see how that works out for him after the inevitable break up) and cousin of the CTO. I got the job b/c of my college's alumni network.
God bless Nepotism! Well, not really- sucks for good candidates who don't know anyone...then again, a good candidate would be someone who would make it their priority to meet the people they need. Network or die?
Pretty much! The few times I've been given a job where I didn't have any "contacts" I constantly bugged them; calling, going in person, asking about the "status" of the position and throwing my name in there. Some like to see the persistence (and that you actually care), where others just do it to get you off their back hehe
Maybe in the future I should just give them a link to my Facebook page so they can "connect" and know what I do and who I associate with lol (kinda pathetic really)
