so let me get this right,
Lets say I own a website whos domain is located in England etc, I post a picture of SimHQ, fearless frog visits my website and is horrified to see that I have broken some IP laws, contacts the domain and quotes SOPA/PIPA violation etc, and my website would get taken down?
If so that stinks, even more so because its a US law that is effecting a non US Citizen in a non US country, and my UK domain would have to comply with a US law?
That is seriously wrong. Not exactly. The infringing website could/would be blocked from US access via the DNS servers. As I understand, this only applies to US based DNS servers. This is why the technical weaknesses of law can be so easily sidestepped, just by changing your router's DNS to a server outside the US, or simply by typing the direct IP address of the desired website. Can't recall the source on that now, I think it was a technical paper I read through the EFF. Here's a good explanation of how the bills would work: http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/technical-examination-of-sopa-and.htmlIP address change, as that's what DNS is for as the first stage of routing - plus if users started changing to non-US DNS servers then you really wonder how long it would be for an amendment to the bill to be added to compel US-based ISP's to limit. After all, you're not a pirate are you? arrgghhh!

I think its getting closer to where its time to put down the pens and placards and pick up real instruments of political change. I have to agree, although it will take much more than this to ignite the general public.

I somehow doubt that.

If SimHQ got temporarily blanked in the US DNS system because somebody posted a link of Mickey Mouse holding a model F22 from an image hosted in Belgium then that's an enormous amount of weaponry available right there. Think of all those idle guns looking for something to do! lol PS Watching the news today, and laughing at the congressmen furiously back-tracking so fast their heels are worn out. Never underestimate people bored on the Internet people in DC..

I have to agree, although it will take much more than this to ignite the general public. There have already been a variety of things that have happened that would warrant protests and the like but have failed to ignite the general public (those that have protested have been deemed to be loons and have subsequently been suppressed). Frankly for there to be protests and other political actions the general public must be conscious of what is going on. I doubt that they are. The big media frankly assists in this lack of consciousness, after all, stories on Paris Hilton or the Kardashians are much more successful at catering to the lowest common denominator than stories on finance capitalism or SOPA or any number of other events and situations.

stories on Paris Hilton or the Kardashians are much more successful at catering to the lowest common denominator than stories on finance capitalism or SOPA or any number of other events and situatins. And yet threads about the Kardashians and Paris Hilton seem to get more posts on SimHQ than posts about economics and politics. Oh, and if those threads have revealing pics you can forget about it!
