It's sad to see Lucas playing the same race card excuse that has been so overused by politicians and other public figures. The fact is that film studios weren't interested in making "Red Tails" because of the subject matter, not because of the race of the characters in the story.
If you look at the box office history for military aviation films, you'll see that the majority of them have tanked. "Top Gun" was of course a huge unique exception.

Well I for one wont go to the theater to see it. I don't have much confidence but I will see it this Saturday to at least give myself some justification for my opinions on the film. I'll be sure to post my in-depth review on SimHQ.

I just don't go to the theater anymore to see a movie, and Red Tails won't be any different. From what I've seen in the previews, it's not a movie that I'll rate very highly if I see it, but who knows. It opens in two days and I don't think has been made available to most reviewers, which isn't usually a good sign (although that may only be because of the difficult time Lucas had in getting it distributed). I like the concept behind it that Lucas expressed in the article, and would really like it to be a good movie, but I just don't get that feeling.
I found the article itself pretty interesting. In particular, the reference to how Lucas now views the fans in the same way he views the movie studios.

PS- love this quote:
“Red Tails” will be the last blockbuster Lucas makes. “Once this is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do,” says Rick McCallum, who has been producing Lucas’s films for more than 20 years. “He will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker.”
What nonsense.

What nonsense. Rick McCallum is the biggest ass kisser in Hollywood. Bar none.

I can understand Lucas wanting to retire from a business he's never been fond of, just used as a means to an end...to tell stories on film. The "he's completed his task" fluff is moronic.

David Lynch has essentially done the same thing very recently. I can definitely understand the motive.

Many directors have, as well as actors and others. Lucas is just a bit more high profile.

Given how bad Old Fatneck's last five or so movies have been, I'd say he completed his task around 1981.

Too bad he's quitting after he ruined Star Wars.
I mean, Greedo shooting first in the Cantina? It totally wiped out the meaning of Han Solo as a character.
I could go on (and on, and on), but I'll stop here.
Forget SOPA, they need to make a law to stop people from ruining their OWN IP.
