I rate your review very highly. Everyone who's screaming "nerf" all of a sudden ought to take the time to read it.
Il-2 1946 just got real yo.

Ya some really great feature write ups here at SimHQ. I just had to have rFactor 2 after reading the article and now same for IL2.
Excellent

The Ilyushin Il-4 (not to be confused with the lymphokine Interleukin-4) is a bomber aircraft... Easy mistake, that one.

I have not played IL-2 in several years and would like to re-install the program. I checked out the User Guide for the new patch however there are no installation instructions.
Will someone please give me the clean install procedure?

@Chops, Numerical order is the key. If you've got the IL2 1946 CD, you have 4.07m. Then install the 4.08m patch followed by the 4.09, 4.10, 4.10.1 then 4.11. Easy peasy. If you have something other than IL2 1946 it may be a bit more complicated. You can download the patches right from SimHQ's mirror here: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/265/1/IL_2_Series_Downloads.htmlThanks to all for the kind words about the article! I'm excited to see this classic continue to have new life breathed into it! Well done, Team Daidalos. Well done.

It looks like all of the content of the v4.10.1 patch is in the v4.11m patch. I did a manual check to compare both patches and I couldn't find any files that were missing. If I didn't miss anything during my check then you will no longer need to use the v4.10.1 patch. I am going to try and confirm it with the Daidalos Team before I update the Patching Guide at M4T. ---------------------------------------------------------------- I have not played IL-2 in several years and would like to re-install the program. I checked out the User Guide for the new patch however there are no installation instructions.

Excellent write-up. Lists the major improvements in nice detail. IMO, the updates to AI makes them one of the best available in flight sims today.

Anyone know if true widescreen / multiscreen support is on the Team Daidalos radar screen, or am I stuck with San's FovChanger forever. That being said, looks amazing. I look forward to having fun with it tonight.

@Hoplite: If you find San's FoV mod unstable, give Storebror's "FOV Changer Mod" a try. It's on the SAS1946 forum.

I have not played IL-2 in several years and would like to re-install the program. Prior to "IL-2: 1946" you could stack sequels on top of Forgotten Battles and top them off with content patches. However, the full "1946" release changed that because it came with so much additional content beyond the Forgotten Battles+Aces Expansion Pack+Pacific Fighters+Pe2 Peshka combination of addons that it effectively became the new start point for anybody wanting to use the 4.08m and higher patches. In other words, if you have a pre-1946 version of IL-2 Sturmovik, Forgotten Battles or Pacific Fighters there is no way you can patch it up to where you can use the new 4.11m patch. You're best and only option is to purchase "IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946" which installs the full anthology of IL-2 content all at once as one complete and singular title, and then sequentially upgrade that version with all of the patches noted by EinsteinEP.

Excellent article Einstein. I flew some 4.11m IL-2 last night and I noticed two things,
1. Your own AI autopilot will still overheat your engine. Is it supposed to be like this? I would assume that your autopilot AI would know how to manage engine temp.
2. The 6DOF TrackIR movement works in the default cockpit view but not in the Shift-F1 "close up" view. I assume it's supposed to be this way?

I might give this a go and re-install IL-2 again.
However I have SoftTH multi screen now that only works in directx not Open GL.
How bad will it look in directx? Really ugly or is it just the perfect water I will lose going to directx?

I've never been able to stand Il-2 in DX. Always looked half-baked compared to OGL.

Yes, hotfix already on.
I suspect it might have been some of the Fusion 069 mods I put on. Either that or maybe too much memory as I'm running with 5160x1600 resolution.
I'm going to reinstall with no mods, and also will use the 4GB patcher to up the memory available.
Hope it works

Excellent news. I'll be reinstalling this. And thanks SimHQ for hosting the patches...although they are REALLY slow to download (I have very fast Internet connection) and some are timing out.
BTW, will these patches allow me to run at 2560x1600? The max resolution I could choose in IL2 1946 is something like 2058x1536 or something.

Has any direct support been added for Hor+ widescreen? Or do I still need to use another program? Also, the PDF mentions "smart Axis." What's that? BTW: "Added ability to jettison bombs with unlimited ammo"<FINALLY! Thanks guys! I usually play my first missions/campigns with unlimited ammo when I jump back in so I can focus on gunner skill without having to reload the sorte. It was annoying spending the whole time with bombs strapped to your plane

Also, the PDF mentions "smart Axis." What's that? Later in the .pdf there's a detailed explanation of it. Basically, multiple throttle controllers are mapped more intelligently to planes with more than 2 engines. For example, a dual throttle control with a four engine plane will have one throttle control both engines on the left side and the other throttle controlling the other side.
