I love this film. I love how it points out how utterly stupid a bunch of rules can be, and also how you can view Douglas as either the bad guy or the good guy or neither, and his realization at the end is priceless.
"I'm the bad guy? How'd that happen?" It really did elicit some kind of sympathy for D-FENS, which was odd in a clever sort of way. I also like how had it been a real gun, he would have gotten Pendegrass--which is eerily scary because he could have killed him but also showed that in the core he really wasn't wanting to kill anyone unnecessarily (though possibly killing his family was not very cool either)
A couple of funny stories regarding this movie:
1) I saw it in the theatre and afterwards, I realized I had to go the bathroom really really bad. So I went to the diner next to the theatre and asked if I could use their restroom. They said I had to buy something. So I took a pack of gum from their stand and offered to buy it. They said I had to be seated and buy something off the menu. I told them, "Look, I just saw 'Falling Down', this is NOT what you want to be doing to me!" Well, they still wouldn't let me and admittedly I exercised restraint and had to find someplace else to go. I just couldn't beleive it was happening right after seeing the movie--another example of a silly rule.
2) I'm in LA visiting a friend of mine. We go to this surplus store and I'm walking around shopping but I have deja vu, "I've seen this place before." though I've never been there. Then it dawned on me: it was the surplus store from "Falling Down." So I asked the cashier if it was, and he said yes. And sure enough above the register there is an autographed pic of Michael Douglas and the neo Nazi guy. I looked around and recognized the surroundings where the two dudes pull down the sunglass stand, where the changing room was, even where they combat boots were were the same. I took some pictures from the moviegoer point of view for posterity, heh.
