For the next 24 hours, every time you have to answer someone in the affirmative, look at them and say... "Uh, YEAH-uh!" If you're feeling indifferent about the subject, say... "WHATeverrrr!" And if you wish to answer in the negative, reply... "NOT!" If you have to greet someone, crank your voice up eleven octaves above its normal pitch and say... "HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiii! How're yoooooooooooooooouuu? It's so nice to seeeeeee yooooou!" I notice those are becoming more common lately. I find it interesting that everyone I encounter in town has the same personality and mannerisms. I wish I controlled television and movie content. Oh, the fun I could have! So what are some of your faves from NewSpeak? Cheers! Rick...

Most of those are OLD SPEAK Rick..where have you been mate..under a rock Our favourite ozzie one is "yes no" or to put in the way it would be said over here ..yeah nah. Got any cold beer mate ?..Yeah nah. Get that old clunker of a gearbox of yours sorted mate ? ..Yeah nah. Hey Shazza! (shouting over neighbours fence) Is Dazza home yet? ..Yeah nah... Well..tell him that Mazza and Wozza want to see 'im! Nooooot and wateva (correct spelling) were children of the 80's. Newspeak i would consider more stuff like ..Meh or lol,yes people are actually using lol in conversation now.I know, welcome to the next gen.

Most of those are OLD SPEAK Rick..where have you been mate..under a rock Our favourite ozzie one is "yes no" or to put in the way it would be said over here ..yeah nah. Actually, the backwoods in the mountainous areas of Oklahoma and Arkansas. You may remember them mentioning that Lucky Ned Pepper was hiding out over in the Indian Nations in the Winding Stair Mountains in "True Grit". That's where I live. For staying up to date with the world, it's much more remote than under a rock, LOL! As for all variations of "yes no", I'm sure that has crept into Oz with South African immigrants. They've been saying that for years. Their version is "Ja nie" (pronounced YAH KNEE-UH). But it means the same thing. That's an oldie in South Africa. Cheers! Rick...

Around here I usually hear lots of "What's up?" "How's it going?" "Cool/badass." "Uh...ok." "No."
So either Florida is way ahead or way behind. However, given that a lot of this is stuff I rememeber hearing years ago, I guess we're ahead!

...Ligers
Deb: What are you drawing? Napoleon Dynamite: A liger. Deb: What's a liger? Napoleon Dynamite: It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed. Bred for it's skillz and magic.
...Skillz.
Skillz and Liger.Pretty much unknown words before the 90's.

I'm working on this with my Family. My wife has a "Like" and "all" problem. It was cute for a long time. Then we had kids. And now they're all like, saying like like their mom does and its like totally making us look like lamos when we talk.
So, I've tried multiple different things to remove it from the vocabulary.
Calling it out in real time doesn't work. She scrunches up her face and says "nevermind, forget it."
Advising them as they begin to tell a tale "Try not to say like" completely throws off their flow of the story and they often, again, don't tell it.
This mostly happens when like, they are like retelling a story of something that happened to them and like their friend where was she was all "I don't talk like a valley girl" and my wife was all "You do, like all the time."
Any help? I don't use like and all usually, but I'm the bad guy for trying to fix their speech, and not accepting them for the unique, like, snowflake they are. Any ideas on a good way to ge it out?

I know, riiiight? I'm just sayin' Hell s yeah! My partner - meaning my homosexual significant other. I always heard that the word "gay" used to mean happy, but that word got changed before my time and I have always known it to mean homo. "Partner" on the other hand got snuck in at some point in my life when I wasn't looking. My friend and I used to say we were partners when refering to our songwriting, but now I won't go anywhere near that word. Issues - meaning problems. Now you might not see this as new speak, but hear me out. There is the new speak that comes as a passing fad and fades quickly, but then there is the kind that takes a permanent hold - "issues" is one of those. It used to have the following meanings: 1) a point of argument 2) to come forth, as in smoke issuing from a chimney 3) a publication (issue number 6) and several others, but it was never a synonym for "problem" as in "you have ISSUES!" However, depending on which dictionary you look in you will see this newer meaning included. This is language evolution at work.
