Let me help you spend it.

How about an F-86 Sabre?

Or for $1.75 million, how about a P-51 Mustang? (why is a Sabre cheaper than a Mustang??? Mmmm...)

Or for a mere $2.2 million, a supersonic Canadian F-5 Freedom Fighter?

I wonder if it is too late for me to enter the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes?

I'll help with the Sabre, but you'll have to find someone else with money...

I can't recall ever seeing one of these for sale before: AH-1G Cobra.

Accepted by the Army in 1968, this AH-1G Cobra was sent directly to Vietnam and assigned in April 1969 to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Mobile) where it served in B Troop, 2/17th Air Cavalry Squadron until December 1971. The aircraft spent its entire time in Vietnam (4/69-12/71) with B Troop where it accumulated 1680 combat flying hours. In January 1972 Cobra # 67-15737 was returned to the United States and continued serving with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Mobile) at Fort Campbell, KY until December 1975. The aircraft was transferred to the Texas Army National Guard where it served until its retirement from military service.

I'll take the Cobra. Or how 'bout a nice T-38 decked out like the ones the astronauts fly at NASA. You won't find one pimped like that in the Air Force. In bigger stuff, I wouldn't mind my own Super DC3.

Cheers!

My grandfather bought a P-47 for $500 after WW2. But he couldn't afford to store/maintain it, so he sold it. I don't recall how much he got for it. Probably not much more than what he bought it for.

Don't look back. You'll be heartbroken, when you find out all the things they did with the then unwanted beauties our how little they went for.

Being here in Florida, I would be able to go anywhere I chose. Something nostalgic about those seaplanes.

B-25, Able Dog and the Goose are tops on my list too. There's just something about big round motors!

I also love this USMC T-6G. I read some of the specs and that thing is not much more expensive to operate (fuel wise at least) than wet rental of a 172!

I wonder what the flight characteristic are like with the source of thrust all the way out back on the aerocar...

Personally, if I had oodles of money I'd get an OV-10 Bronco.

Great visibility from the pit, space for the missus and kids in the rear seat and re-fitted cargo area. The kids would all be sitting one behind the other, so none of those "he's on MY side of the car" arguments biggrin , dual turboprops for fuel efficiency, ease of maintenance and safety. Can land pretty much anywhere you'd want to go. The performance would be pretty good given that it wouldn't carry any ordinance it's rated to...
Also, they look COOL! smile

Apparently despite still being in use they're quite difficult to find on the market.

By the time I figure I'll have enough money to be able to afford an ex-military aircraft, I believe {A} that I'll have too much to lose to risk climbing into a relatively dangerous machine, and {B} simulator technology should be be good enough by then to make it make it kind of pointless.

Until we have Star Trek like “Holodecks” B will never happen. IMHO.

We're probably only 20 odd years away from having something equivalent, of course not using "replicated matter" or whatever as depicted in Star Trek but where the experience would be very convincing regardless.

BUY IT!

You don't have a multi-engine rating. That means I would have to come over and fly it for you biggrin

Oooh. I know a guy here with a T-6, and it is much, MUCH more expensive to operate than a 172. Four times as expensive. At anything over half throttle it guzzles fuel like the first row of cars at a NASCAR race.

How much of that is a function of fuel costs in Norway? Note in my OP I was just comparing fuel cost of the T6 vs wet rental of a 172.

The specs I read for that aircraft stated 30 GPH at $5.50 a gallon or $165 /hr in fuel costs. Locally (up state SC) a well equipped 172 goes for at least $105 /hr.

You're building one???

You really need to start a thread all about your build experiences.

Maybe there's a do it yourself kit for those too? I mean, it can't be all that complex compared to a Nieuport 11, so what could go wrong?

I misread a bit. Fuel costs only vs wet lease of a 172 and we're almost even. But then there's maintenance. An R-1340 isn't cheap to maintain, neither is the plane itself.

That said, it flies wonderfully, and the supersonic propeller tips are a joy to hear, both from inside the cockpit and on the ground biggrin

F-106 looks great, but how about a few Hunters, Buccaneers or Lightnings?

Wonder how much they will go for? I remember a year or so ago visiting the Lightning Preservation Group, way back in the late 80's they paid £4000 for their first jet, and then I think £12000 for the second one.

Disappointed Thunder City has closed down, that's my retirement holiday up in smoke.
