I heard this on FOX News (the only news you should listen to!) and no dollar amount was provided. hopefully, it is just missing and not some dips**t trying to sell on black market! http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationnow/2012/01/-lewis-mcchord-army-equipment.htmlAbout 100 soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state remained confined to base Monday as U.S. Army officials tried to trace $600,000 worth of missing high-tech equipment. The equipment includes sophisticated rifle scopes, laser sights and night-vision equipment -- gear described by Army officials as "sensitive" but not necessarily dangerous to the public.

There will be some soldiers going to Leavenworth over this.
I remember one time a soldier jumped off a Bradley and stuck his rifle against a tree while taking a whiz. He jumped back on his track and took off, forgetting the weapon.
Of course he didn't say anything for four days and then admitted to it just as we were about ready to come in from the field. We were on lockdown for five days, in the field while we looked for that rifle. The knucklehead couldn't remember where he stuck the weapon either so we had to go, double arm interval across three training areas looking for that damned rifle.
I was the one that found it. Got a four day pass for it too. The soldier that lost the weapon went from PFC to PV1 overnight, got 30 days detention at the post detention facility (Corrective Care Facility or Charlie's Chicken Farm as we called it). Lets just say he didn't stay in the army much longer after that.

Reminds me of a jump while on active duty. This LT lost his m9 (broke the lanyard) just as he exited the aircraft. The whole unit spent three days combing the drop zone for it. The DZ had quite a bit of wooded area too. We did find it in the end though.

You don't want to be in a U S military unit that loses a weapon. It is no fun.
That is why I go nuts when they talk about the FBI having hundreds of weapons missing.

Yep, there's no forgiveness or leniency for that in any of the services. Another one they hate is missing unit movement. I saw a lot of youngsters in the Navy get hammered over the years because they waited until the last minute to part company with their girlfriend and didn't make it in time. That'll cost you. You get there and your airplane is retracting its gear and climbing out or the chopper is fading into the distance or your vessel is underway already and you're not aboard, you better believe there's dismal times ahead. Better to kiss her goodbye early. Cheers! Rick...

Someone in my unit losing a weapon or other sensitive item was always my biggest fear when I was in charge of the company arms room.

That is why I go nuts when they talk about the FBI having hundreds of weapons missing. Know the feeling. We once miscounted our explosives stock when I was in my service (I was a munition specialist), which made it seem like a pound of C-3 was missing. Boy that started a mess, but thankfully after three more counts we had ensured that it was in fact, not missing.

You don't want to be in a U S military unit that loses a weapon. It is no fun. Especially if you live off post and have to sleep on a cot in the barracks hallway for 11 days because some idiot lost his weapon during a FTX...it's not high on my "To Do Again" list, for sure.
