Katee Sackhoff to Star Opposite Vin Diesel in Riddick


While you probably know her as Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica, Katee Sackhoff will soon have a new sci-fi franchise to add to her repertoire. We previously reported that Sackhoff was being considered for a role opposite Vin Diesel in the upcoming sci-fi flick, Riddick. It now looks as if she’s a lock as Sackhoff is reported to be in final negotiations for the role. She’ll be playing Dahl, a Nordic mercenary tasked with tracking down the titular anti-hero. The third installment of the franchise that started with Pitch Black and staggered with The Chronicles of Riddick was once again written and directed by David Twohy; it also stars Karl Urban reprising his role as Lord Vaako. Great news IMO. Also glad to hear it's moving again. At one point I think I read that they said they had 2 movies coming, I hope that's the case. A new game along the lines of Butcher Bay would be nice too.

Definitely yes. I really enjoyed both Assault on Dark Athena and Escape from Butcher Bay. The voice acting was first rate.

When I saw Chronicles, I left the theater disappointed that it just didn't seem like the same universe as Pitch Black, which was more basic and industrial feeling. The new one felt chaotic and undefined, a little TOO fantastic by comparison.
However, after the shock wore off, I started loving the movie just on it's own merits. One of the first blu-ray movies I bought. I bet they tone it down a good bit in the new movie to hit the sweet spot.
There was also a short anime dvd release movie before CoR, kind of filled in a little bit between Pitch Black and Chronicles.

Yes, the 2nd film felt like it was another SF series that had the character of Riddick show up in it.

However, to be fair the original film told you little of the universe they were in. All you knew was it was a transport ship that gets caught in a freak accident and stranded on an abandoned world. What backstories we get tell little of the greater world they're in.

It was Alien/Aliens all over again. You're seeing another part of the same universe, but just like walking the streets of Tokyo won't show you what the alleys of Mexico City are like, the sequel goes in a totally new direction with just the same main character returning.

Chronicles of Riddick had the exact effect on me as Alien 3. Both films were radically different from my initial expectations but later on after a couple more viewings, both movies really grew on me.

Also in both cases the versions available on DVD had changes that improved the film over the theatrical releases!

Especially with Alien 3. The changes there were very significant compared to the extra footage for Riddick which was nice but nothing huge.

It was like the stuff deleted from ST6 or the first X Files film. They rounded things out and made it deeper but didn't change the way anything really went.

I really enjoyed both films for different reasons. I look forward to the 3rd.

The first film was like Alien--a B-flick with aspirations of being a blockbuster that succeeded to a large degree.
The 2nd film was a blockbuster that largely did NOT succeed for various reasons, but I felt it was a worthy film.

I'm going to see the 3rd one, I just don't know if I'll see it in the theater or not. I didn't see PB in the theater, but I did see CoR.
