Recently met a man who has 2 red tailed hawks that he hunts with. They mostly kill rabbits and squirrels. I am looking forward to going on a hunt with him. We have a nesting pair near our house and see them often. Yesterday one stopped by in the upper branches of an oak tree and finished off a pigeon it had just killed. What powerful flyers!

Saw these when I was TDY in Alaska, some marines thought they were tough and one almost got stumped to death....lucky his friends stopped him.

When I was stationed there, Moose use to come into base housing all the time. A little scary when you have young kids running around.

It's amazing how well his markings conceal him. As others have already mentioned I had trouble spotting him too. It was like looking for Waldo. Now that I see him I can't help but notice him first off.

We used to have red tail hawks in our back yard when I lived in NJ. Great for squirrel population management. Sadly a large contingent of crows moved into the area and drove them off. They kept dive bombing the nest like SBDs toward a flat top. The red tail was stuck between keeping it's nest and the youngins safe and preserving it's own life. It finally opted for the latter, but I think the crows managed to kill what was in the nest before it left.

I had been video taping the hawks but over the years I lost the tape or recorded over it. C'est domage.
