I once came across a mod (on Skyrim Nexus) that allowed the game to make use of more than 2GB RAM. I cannot seem to find it again now. Any help appreciated.

Also looking for recommended mods. Thanks!

Why?

Update 1.3.1 enabled the LAA bit in the executable.

No need for mods now.

I recommend this for better performance: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1326816-skyboost-topic-3/

Yes.
Couple of mods I'm using at the moment to make life a bit easier (improving the UI experience):
Maps with roads
A better favorites menu
The first one improves the map with roads (whoever heard of maps without roads?
You have a choice of main roads only or all roads.
The second one rearranges the favorites menu (default 'Q' key on PC) into something vastly more efficient. No more scrolling down a list!
Hope you find these useful.

So, does it use only up to 4GB? And does it do so automatically or do I have to "tune" it?

Zero, thanks for the heads up on the mods!

LAA is not tuneable, it just makes applications aware of the address space above 2GB. It actually never uses the full 4GB, or more than that.

It does however, brought a lot of stability for me. No crashes since.

It is automatic.

Used it for about a day now and it's nice. My settings were already maxed, so it looked good to begin with, but I have noticed an improvement in some of the textures that no longer looked washed out. It's not night and day, but it is noticeable.

Hey Ice
You may want to take a look at this - I'm seriously considering installing this as a convenience mod.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=6032#content
This is Dovakiin Hideout, it gives every house in Skyrim a Hideout, the Dovakiin's Hideout. Every house will now include a basement door, look around your house, you will find it. This Hideout is shared between all houses, as long as you have the key for the house.

Features:
*******************
- A large Basement with 5 entrances for each house.
- Ench Table/Alch Table
- Woodcutter, Smithy, Craft Bench, Smelter, Skinning Rack.
- 20 Weapon Racks
- 12 Weapon Plaques of Various types
- 4 Display Cases
- 1 Display Case allowing weapon placed in it (test.)
- 9 Normal Mannequins
- 2 Mini-Mannequins
- 10 Chests
- 4 Satchels
- Tons of area to decorate
- .ESM and .ESP allowing for Updates without removal of items.

This is called SkyUI and it is also very good. It gives you proper (PC) menus instead of the console ports.
