Kitch being commercially mass produced art which lacks much in creativity or imagination (such as the "Swedish Girls" pic above). Avant garde being more focused more on the replication of the process of creating a piece of art as opposed to the replication of an object via painting or sculpting. There is also the focus of making someone think about what the work represents (whereas with kitch it tends to be fairly obvious). Lets take the above pic as an example again. As it is it is kitch, however it may be considered avant garde if the caption read "these are not Swedish girls" or "these are not girls" or something similar. Weird? Yes. I think it looks like moody child smudges. I don't get abstract art. Dali is art to me. I love street art. Bunch of colors in a convas, no matter how "muted" or "explosive" doesn't reach out to me. I don't get Warhol. Oh well, guess I miss out.

He was from the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. And Abstract Expressionism, as a genre, was started as a form of artistic rebellion. However, like most artists, it was only after he died that his paintings became extremely valuable.
