Quote:
Boeing Co. plans to shutter operations in Wichita, Kansas, where it has built airplanes since 1929, by the end of 2013 as military projects dry up amid U.S. spending constraints.

Job reductions at the plant that employs more than 2,160 workers will begin in the third quarter of 2012, Boeing said in a statement today. Work on the aerial-refueling tankers the Pentagon ordered in February will be done at the planemaker’s wide-body jet factory in Washington state instead, and some existing work will be moved to Texas and Oklahoma.

Not very good news for anyone living in Wichita Kansas. What else do they have there to keep their economy going?

It's 2000 jobs out of a metro population of over 600,000. It's not like it is the citys only employers.

Hawker Beechcraft, Bombardier, Cessna, and Airbus still have plants there.

I would think part of the reason those companies have plants there is because of Boeing.

How many tier 2, 3,and 4 Boeing suppliers will leave or go out of business because Boeing is gone? Hopefully they shrug the loss of jobs off like its nothing but I highly doubt it since it's never just those jobs at the main plant that are lost.

Those suppliers will continue to supply parts to Boeing, just to Ohio and Washington instead according to Boeing.

as if it were such a minor or trivial closure.

how about all the courier deliveries, local businesses that benefited or relied entirely upon boeing being there?

that closure is going to shake up wichita. they're going to have to scramble to rebuild the big hole boeing's absence will cause in the local economy.

Big hole? it's only 2000 jobs out of over 200k workers in Wikita. And alot of those can get new jobs at once if they bother moving. Boeing is hiring several hundred new jobs in Columbus, Ohio to deal with the 767 airborne refueling contract, and several hundred in Seattle as well for that.

As for courier/deliver services: they get even more profit out of it! because the parts that used to go form sub-contractors in Wikita to the Boeing plant there, now has to be shipped out of state to WA or OH. Profit!

A company's function is not to aid local economies, it's to make money for what it does. Obviously Boeing isn't going to make money off this plant. The end for the plant.
