I want to plug two USB connected fans to a USB hub that will shut off when the monitor sleeps. Any one do something like this? I don't need the fans to run when the monitor is not.

The Dell 30" monitor has two USB ports, one of which is for the Track IR. The USB Hub with the two fans on it can go into the other USB monitor port or to the computer...

The monitor sleep mode is controlled through the Win 7 Power Options.

Program the USB Port that the monitor is plugged into on your mainboard to shut down at the same time limit as the screen?

Hibernate instead of sleep would be the easiest thing. Works better than sleep mode too.

Or... maybe look at using temperature controlled fans. Just have them run when the temp is above xx degrees.

Its the monitor that I want to cool. These little USB fans are a lot quieter than an AC powered one I had been using.

I'm not really putting the whole computer to sleep - just shutting off the monitor after some idle time. Once the monitor is shut down then the fans don't need to run anymore. Too bad the USB ports on the monitor won't power down when the monitor does...

Thanks guys,
WC

I'd just leave them go, and have the USB Ports set to Power Down 10-15 minutes of no System Activity.

That way your screen is off, fans will run for 10-15 minutes to cool it down before shutting off.

Something with a temp control and wall plug would probably suit you better. You could build one up or get a kit like this:

Sounds to me that your monitor is just set to shut off after xx minutes, not involving sleep mode.

My dad just bought a 10 port powered USB hub that had two power switches on it. One controlled the first five ports and the other controlled the second five ports.

Maybe something like that would work for you.

Hmmm, if we keep talking about it in the post then a banner ad should pop up at the bottom of the page.
Not that that is not a bad thing. cool

Here's what I found in Win 7, it lets me set USBs to Enabled or Disabled.

Haven't found a way to get to a specific USB hub....... hmmm Device Mangler..... hmmm Nope - this is what Device Manager shows -

Don't really want to put the computer to sleep or hibernate, just want to shut off the monitor and fans...

Are the USB-hubs powered?

You could put the monitor and the hubs on a power-strip and turn the strip off and on instead of the individual devices.
