Previously I bought Albatros DII and Sopwith Camel.
I don't know which one to buy. S.E.5a, Sopwith Pup, Fokker Dr.I

The S.E.5a seems it has poor visibility to shoot.

Advice please...

The SE5a has very good visibility.

The only thing I don't like of the SE5a is that glass wind screen. The pup maybe slower but seems to have better visibility for aiming.

I'd say Dr.1/SE5a, and then the Pup. The first two are a hard choice... both.
Nothing against the Pup either, but the first two just seem more predominant, if that makes any sense.

Booo, SE5a is best!

The windshield is too dark but you get used to it, definitely get the SE5a next.

Fair enough, I agree that the SE5a windscreen is a bit of a pita.

I'm curious as to what GPU's are being used by people who have an SE-5 windscreen thats "too dark".

I'm currently running an AMD/ATI 5970 with everything maxed in the sim and the windscreen in my trusty SE-5 doesn't look ANYWHERE near that dark-in fact, there's hardly any difference when looking through or around the windscreen.

Are there folks here running both ATI and Nvidia that have this issue?

None of my planes have glass that dark. I've got a GTX 570.

Personally, I rate the SE5 first because of its great utility, then the Pup for its handling, and last the Dr I...for ITS handling! It's still my least favorite plane in the game so far because of how easily I can get into trouble with it. I describe "trouble" as "flying sideways in a nose-up attitude until attempts to get OUT of said attitude result in a spin and usually engine overspeed = slow death to engine".

6870 here. My SE5a windscreen is dark no matter how I adjust the settings.

OK, I downloaded what I'm seeing and comparing it to what's posted, I guess it looks "kinda" close??? This IS a winter scenario, so things are already pretty dark!

I have to admit that it doesn't affect my ability to "see" anything through it, whatsoever. I guess I felt that I wasn't seeing the same as ya'll because it's totally not an issue. It doesn't effect my ability to pick up aircraft or ground targets and it certainly doesn't cause any issues when I'm actually engaging another aircraft.

Bah! I don't even notice the wind screen on the SE5a, and I fly that plane for than anything.
The great thing about the wind screen, you can see through it!!

That SE5a is a fantastic bird. If I could only own one plane, that would be it.

I agree wholeheartedly! I'm not sure how accurate the "ratings" are when I log online but if they ARE accurate, I'm doing just fine in the SE-5. Apparently the SE-5 can do pretty well against its contemporaries if it's flown to its strengths.

The windscreen doesn't seem to have hindered my successes... biggrin

My SE5a windscreen isn't dark. I've got an AMD 5770.

You actually need them all. They all fly differently and I enjoy flying them all but out of the three, I like the Pup the best.

Asking a question like this is like asking which is best -- Pepsi or Coke. It's all a matter of personal opinion and personal likes and dislikes. I happen to be enamored with the early war planes -- so I like the Pup.

However, my favorite of all the RoF planes is the Pfalz DIIIa because it turns well, doesn't shed wings in a dive and is easier to fly on full realism than all the rest of the planes -- at least in my opinion. Someone else may feel differently.

So, plan on eventually buying all the planes in RoF -- even if it's one at a time as you can afford it!

Check you six,
Crockett

What's the framerate with your hardware configuration?.
I have same videocard model ATI 5770 but my CPU is older a quadcore 2 2.5 and I set almost everything maxed out(AAx4+1080p) getting between 25-35.
The I5 is relatively cheap so maybe I could get more FPS adding an i5.

About the planes I am trying to buy them all. ROF is a great wwi sim and it's getting better with each new patch. All the planes are worth the money. They all almost an exact copy of the real thing.

Oh By the way, I prefer pepsi. biggrin biggrin

I'm a Pepsi man too!

I've got my resolution at 1920x1080 and trees on low. Everthing else is med or high. (I'm not at my desktop and will have to give you the actual specs later) I get around 35 to 55 depending on whether I'm close to the ground and how many planes are on the screen. I'd like to have crank things up higher and higher fps but I never experience any stuttering or slow downs. I do plan on an GPU upgrade when the new nVidia cards come out -- probably to a nVidia GTX 580 -- if the price drops when the new cards come out.

Strangely enough.... it hasn't hindered my failure either.

Been a while since I've been in that bird. I don't remember the wind screen being that dark. That says several things. Either it was never that dark. It is that dark and I don't remember. Or if it is that dark and I don't remember, it had no effect on my flying/aim/situational awarenes.

You should be using special shadows.

For shadows I use Special med that helps me with the fps. Feel free to increase the anisotropic setting to maximum it won't affect too much the performance.

For post effects and AA I use this mod.
http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3484798/Alternative_to_Anti_Aliasing_F.html#Post3484798

As a guide for those interested I have a QuadCore 2 2.5, 4GB and ATI 5770 1GB. Getting around 25-35.
