It's this time of year (well, I'm not doing it every year). It's time to upgrade my simulation hardware.

The main reason I'm upgrading is that BS2 doesn't run very well on my current machine. Game-wise, I don't run much else on it, and the rest of the time the machine serves as a workstation running Linux.

My main problem when choosing hardware is the graphics card. Since NVidia cards are the ones that are best supported on Linux, that's what I need, but there are far too many models of the cards, so my question is which is the best NVidia card I can get for Black Shark?

What's yer budget ? GTX 580 will play the game very nicely if you can afford it.

Next step down 570

Next after that 560 TI.

I use AMD, but when I upgrade I'm going to go Nvidia GTX 570 because it seems to be the sweet spot for bang for buck.

I think the 580 is too much $$ for what you get.

My recommendation is either the 570 or the 560 Ti. If you can swing it, get the 570. If you need to save some $$, get the 560 Ti. There's a "regular" 560, no Ti, that costs even less but I think it's really not worth it.

Thanks. I just checked the price list, and indeed the 570 is significantly more expensive than the 560 Ti. What is the difference between these, and in particular, is that something that can be noticed in Black Shark?

Loke, what are your other system specs? I'm using the GTX 570 and it rocks, but if I had simply installed that in my older quad core 2.4 GHz system, the CPU would have held back improvement in performance. Right now my i7 quad 3.4 GHz is a good mate for the GTX 570. Of course, results will vary depending on other factors.

GTX 570 : 732MHz core/1464MHz memory, 1280MB RAM, 480 stream processors
GTX 560 Ti: 822Mhz core/1645MHz memory, 1GB RAM, 384 stream processors (they're clocked higher but having so many fewer proc's makes it slower overall)

There is also an in-between (in price and performance) 560 Ti-448, so named because it was 448 stream processors. In fact, given the specs (same speed core and RAM, and same amount of RAM), it's actually a 570 with 32 fewer processors, possibly disabled due to defects in manufacturing.

In other words, they make all these 570s and some of them have processors that fail quality testing, so they disable a total of 32 and sell it for less as a 560 Ti-448. In fact, while ~$100 separates the 570 and 560 Ti, the 560 Ti-448 splits the difference.

So if you can't make the 570's price, the 560 Ti-448 is almost as fast for ~$50 less. If you can't swing that, for another ~$50 you can get the regular 560 Ti with another drop in performance.
I got a 570 because the 560Ti-448 wasn't out then.

For what it's worth, I'm running a 460GTX and it runs perfectly.
