Monitor Aspect ratio..ridding myself of squatty dials

I'm beating myself over this one. I can't figure it out. I suppose I could be less of a perfectionist and just live with it, but hey this is a simulator. Where in real life would you see oblongated squatty dials? Unless you were under the influence and then of course you shouldn't be flying.
My problem: 24" screen with a 1920 x 1080 native resolution. I modified the conf ini file, trying several suggestions that I gleaned from other posts. Mainly width=1920, height=1080, Save aspect--tried both 0 and 1, EnableResize--tried both 0 and 1. I also tried adjusting the Nvidia settings, preserving/adjusting aspect ratios, etc... and I still get the same screen, squatty dials and aircraft.
Any suggestions? I searched many forum postings to no avail. I appreciate the collective brainpower of this forum's members.

Me too. My solution is to play IL-2 in its native aspect ratio. The choices I found were: - circular dials, but with black areas at left and right of the screen
- circular dials, graphics extending to left and right, but guillotined at top and bottom
- graphics stretched to fit top/bottom and left/right, but distorted graphics
I would rather have circular dials and black bars at the sides, than lose graphics or fill up my LCD screen with distorted graphics.

I'm not sure if I understand your problem but this game wasn't made with widescreen monitors in mind, being too old for that. Many widescreen users, myself included (I run it at 1680x1050), chose "graphics extending to left and right, but guillotined at top and bottom". The game is still being developed and patched by Team Daidalos, so perhaps they will introduce a real widescreen support one day, provided the game's engine allows it.

Logarto, what you are describing is exactly what I would like to accomplish, provided that the end result is everything being proportional. I'd appreciate your settings, both conf ini settings and the in-game video controls (i.e. open GL vs DirectX, 1024x 768 x32 etc...) I'd sincerely love to getting this working properly on this machine.

I was running 1920*1080 fullscreen, with the top and bottom cutoff. After a minute or two, couldn't notice that anything was missing, particularly with TIR. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly how I edited the conf.ini, but the answer was in the ubi IL-2 forums, something like this, had to do some hunting- This This And this Even though my monitor is 1920 *1080, I believe that I had to set the conf resolution to 1920*1200. I do recall that conf.ini had to be made read-only after making the changes, otherwise the game put it back.

Thanks tagTaken2. I gleaned all of the suggestions tried several and still a no go. My next step is to start afresh and re-install game. Good suggestion on 1920 x 1200.
I gotta get this going since Il-2COD is a flop
Sincerely

Can you post the window section of your conf ini
It should look like this
[window] width=1920 height=1080 ColourBits=32 DepthBits=24 StencilBits=8 ChangeScreenRes=1 FullScreen=1 DrawIfNotFocused=0 EnableResize=0 EnableClose=1 SaveAspect=0 Use3Renders=0

My 26" monitor is a native 1920 x 1200 and it runs without distortion, for what it's worth, apologies. But you can't find those monitors anymore, 1920 x 1080 is a b@stard child.
As mentioned elsewhere, "go 1920x1080 for 22" or lower, but 1920x1200 for 24" or bigger." Just for reference.

I have a 32" LED TV and a Dell 24"Monitor. The TV @ 1920x1080 and the Dell @ 1920x1200 I get no distortion on either providing my conf.ini is set correctly

Thanks all.
I just re-installed Il-2, and Bandy and Brigstock I will put your remedies to work for me soon, but upon the re-install I did notice that at one point in the re-installation process it asks me if I want windowed or full screen. I selected full screen. Now while in game play in "Video Modes" under hardware setup it won't allow me to choose between Windowed and full screen. It's permanently on full screen. I wonder if this has anything to do with my dilema. Even though I have hard disks of all that I purchased over the years. The game that I installed was a download that I purchased for about $6 a couple of years ago. Any Thoughts ?

u probably know all this already; best to install IL2 to non-program file folder; when u modify conf.ini, make sure it actually saves the changes, and last but not least, every time u open the il2fb set-up utility and change anything, it will override any of your manual changes to conf.ini..., don't think full/vs. windowed matters, should run in full always
i have win7, runs awesome
good luck

Bighead cz, What you mentioned is all new to me. In the past I haven't had to get in this great a detail. One thing for sure though is that the changes to the conf ini file are saved. When I reopen the program file and check it after play, the mods I made are still there. Thanks.

Helmut are we talking abut the original IL2 or Il2-1946. I'm not sure but I'm fairly certain the original won't do widescreen in the same way 1946 does

Disc or download version. I know there are some oddities in the dl version. Seems odd that your conf.ini changes are not in effect.

Windows 7 will continue to ignore changes to the config file as long as it is in the Program Files folder. Source: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3411129/Re_Wide_Screen_Monitor_Distort.html#Post3411129I have backups on my D: drive of earlier versions of IL-2, but the desktop shortcut for launching the game points to "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\il2fb.exe". It's the conf file within that path that I have been trying to modify in vain. Just as a precaution, I made backups of the conf files in the earlier versions on my D: drive, then changed them to the same values for widescreen. Again, no joy. Win 7 will give you all sorts of fits in the Program Files folder. I was told it didn't matter which drive was using the "Program Files" folder Windows 7 would not allow alterations. Create a Games folder and move the entire Ubisoft folder into it. The other option would be to copy it into the Games folder and leave the original. "C:\Games\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\ Wheels Wheels

Wheels Ouch. I've only ever played it on XP. Maybe we should have a SimHQ wiki for each sim, containing info like this.

I had IL2 in my program files folder. I did, however, make myself the owner of the entire program files folder. There is a reg fix out there that adds a take ownership option to the right click function. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-v...-menu-in-vista/Worth having this IMO, can make life easier with Win7

Thanks wheelsup Your suggestion is like a breath of fresh air! I was giving up hope having tried every permutation of the conf ini file and nvidea graphics and monitor tricks. I'll report back with results.

wheelsup, Thanks a million ! It worked. I created a file outside of Windows program file. I titled it "games." Installed Il-2 to it and Changed the conf ini file to 1920 x 1080 my monitor's resolution and Voi La'. Looks beautiful. Squatty dials gone! My appreciation to all of you.
Now on to getting the game to recognize my Saitek Pedals. See other post.
