Quote:
Dear Friends,

Due to increased numbers Rise of Flight users and an increasing load on the ROF servers, we have scheduled some routine maintenance work for Monday, December 23th beginning at 10:00 UTC (14:00 Moscow time).

Due to this maintenance, some of our additional services such as the ROF website and forum will not be available. We plan to have the maintenance completed by 14:00 UTC (18:00 Moscow time) on December 23th.

During this time you can use all offline modes of gameplay in ROF as usual.

Also, to ensure that our servers continue to perform properly on a day to day basis for our customers, routine maintenance will be conducted monthly and take place the second Monday of every month. We will announce estimated start and end times for monthly maintenance on the ROF forum.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our users. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Great stuff!
Only in an RoF update log would the Nieuport 11 FM changes get "buried" at the end because of all the new features being introduced!

+1 on the rolleyes

On the other hand (so to speak wink ), an option to "flip the bird" to your opponents might be worth $7.99 to me biggrin

It doesn't matter whether you want a scarf or not-it's the easiest way for us to support the developers. I for one, hope that they continue working on this project for a long time. They aren't going to continue this effort for nothing.

I think people sometimes forget that there are folks trying to feed families with the earnings made from ROF. It would be easy for them to move on to another project and abandon ROF as it's a "completed" game. They don't really owe us anything more and every update should be looked at as a blessing.

I've purchased everything they have to offer and haven't used a bit of the "extra" stuff. Best way to support the guys in the trenches, so to speak! cheers

Have bought the new mission pack but this pilot personalisation pack for $7.99 is one add on too much for me.
Taking advantage of the community in my view.
I wont be adding this to my otherwise complete collection.

Not sure I'd call it "Taking Advantage Of". Now, if they made things like revised FM's for a price... THEN it would be taking advantage of. As it is now, these are nearly completely cosmetic additions, that you do not NEED.

It's like saying a car manufacturer takes advantage of you by offering you options on your car. No one's forcing you to get a fancy satellite radio in your car, and you don't need it. The car still works lovely without it.

Quite silly indeed.

You can bet the squadron will be having pistol only duels just for the thrill of it.

If we don't sell new content, there is no more ROF development. Just the way it is. Plus we gave everyone the white scraf and streamer for free. The Campaign is a third party effort and he deserves to be rewarded for his efforts.

Everything else is included free. I think it's a fair trade.

Jason

Yep, it's fair. I'm happy to pay for the scarf, just to promote further work on the AI, which is the only thing I care about in RoF any more since I stopped flying MP.

Looking forward to my scarf (and more AI tweaks)! Good work Jason and 777!

As is mine!

And I say the lack of a paisley scarf option is criminal.

Dude, fly a sim that's constantly updated by the developers even though it's better than anything available---oh wait, there isn't one............ Jeez, I'll buy the updates for you if you quit whining. Anything to help the ROF guys to keep working on this project. You do realize they could punch out tomorrow and that's the end of it, don't you? dizzy

Quick question-I'm guessing from your responses you don't work for nothing, do you? I know I don't....

IMHO nobody is being taken advantage of here. Little old ladies get taken advantage of on the Home Shopping Network. old_simmer

As someone mentioned, you have a choice to buy or not based on whether the add-on appeals to you or whether you find it worthy of your hard earned cash. Business sometimes goes out on a limb with an idea and the consumers will judge with, or without, their purchase. I'll definitely buy the missions, but the notion/pressure that we should simply 'buy' with disregard to our personal sensibilities is not welcomed.

Perhaps a paisley texture can be arranged at some point in the future. I prefer a nice hound's tooth myself. thumbsup

With all the great free content we've gotten, it amazes me when people complain about the relatively few things they ask us to pay for. If you don't want it, or don't think it's worth the price, then don't buy it. But to say it's "taking advantage" of the community is silly.

They can't give everything away for free. This stuff doesn't make itself.

Sounds great Jason and co, especially the new AI features and thanks a bunch. Happily just bought the new Campaign pack, Vander is a class act and I'm confident it will be high quality, having played many of his single missions already....he has great attention to detail.

Just downloaded the update so cannot comment as yet, looks like the business though and I'm off to give it a spin. smile

Cheers and a very Merry Christmas to you and all the ROF staff! santa cheers

The sidearm is actually quite good fun and the new streamers denote flight lead as they did historically.

I'm hoping the AI bomber pilots will "have a go" with the pistol if you kill the rear gunner. The external animation is extremely cool smile

Seems fair to me, after all some guys have thousand dollars or more in FSX addons. Give them a break and support them or they could be like most game devs, sell it and forget it.

No no no, everyone gets a scarf, for $7.99 you get to choose the colour! rolleyes

+1 on the rolleyes

On the other hand (so to speak wink ), an option to "flip the bird" to your opponents might be worth $7.99 to me biggrin

we've chosen to flip the bird in another direction and opt not to buy. it's not the price, it's the principle. smile

What principle? That the developer should give their work away for free? Some principle.

I didn't realize that Occupy Wall Street was now targeting the game industry.

Think about what you are paying for. I don't see this as a game purchase, well not in the same sense a standard game. Granted what we had on release was an incomplete game. but to be absolutely fair to the developers, not only did they bring the game up to what i see as very near complete and perfect sim, they also listened to us and gave us things we asked for in the sim, all free of charge.
These optional purchases i see as extras, and you don't need to purchase them, nor does it affect the quality of the sim without them. They are just that, EXTRA content and i think that they should be paid for. Our sim community is a very small niche group tbh, how would it be possible for a company to keep on working on a project of this quality and content for free for so long?

I support the developers as much as i can, but there are addons i haven't and probably won't buy. Field mods for one i find too expensive and i can't justify the expense. i wish i could buy everything but i can't ;(

More than anything i want to continue to see this sim evolve and grow, and maybe in the future i will see a WW2 sim as noteworthy as Rise of Flight!!

Yeah, let's all have a little fun with the ensemble options, but in the end you all have to agree this is one of the best updates that didn't involve an aircraft.
Try to argue that! spartasign (always wanted to find an excuse to use that emoticon...).

Anyone get the Dec 25th email announcement??? I'm sure they simply neglected to include Vander's campaign. Have a look at the campaign details, I've flown some missions just this morning, very nice...

Thanks Devs and Vander! Best sim holiday weekend in a loooong time. santa

I was about to post the same thought. Support ROF as best you can and maybe down the road they will expand it into a WW2 mode as well! Now I got colored streamers, scarfs and a pistol to shoot to.

Occupy wallstreet-that's a good one! Non-working twits wanting something for free.

Yeah, that's what I don't get----how many of these wads would continue working on a job they've already been paid out for.

Curious, wonder how many of these folks are working gratis on a daily basis......funny thing is I'm gonna guess not a single one.....

Maybe MS will create a new WWI-oh wait, when pigs fly. What the h-e-double toothpicks is it you guys don't get-if the developers don't get any more money THEY ARE MOVING ON-NO MORE UPDATES!!!!! I'm guessing that even in Russia, people need to make money to survive ( weak pun-forgive me ROF guys!) so why do you think that they'd continue updating and upgrading this sim-for nothing???

Does anyone in their right mind think that someone else will put this kind of effort in a WWI sim?

Yeah, I know they love this sim but the kids gotta eat, don't ya know!!! Jeez.

I think that while it's sometimes true that you don't get what you pay for (cough..CoD..cough) it's even more true that you will never get what you don't pay for.
I think the ROF developers have done a great job balancing between unpaid-for and paid-for content. For crying out load, they are giving away the basic game for free! What other flight sim does that?

Think of it this way - continued support for this sim costs about $10 a month. That is about the price of a TrackIR for a year of RoF. Is it worth it to you? It is to me.

There are about 60 more planes that I want to see. I want to see the AI continue to be improved. So it costs a bit. I feel like I am getting good value.

Not sure 'bout that, just picked up CloD for $10 or so just this morning. It HAS to be worth that! WinkNGrin

Agree with you 100%, and again, challenge anyone to debate otherwise. Just don't give me the "starving infants in Russia" scenario, it demeans us all. Make content and let the community decide whether it is worth it, and let us help to drive future development (not that they haven't listened, cough-cough zeppelin).

While I certainly have not been in on RoF from the very beginning, many here have been, and I consider myself a true supporter. I just can't stomach coolaid...

Let me be clear about my own position: I am a full supporter of RoF and the 777 devs (my own definition of full supporter being having a full hangar and almost all the gauges). I think they've done a fantastic job supporting and expanding the sim, not to mention listening to and informing the community.

My comment was an attempt at humor. I don't think 777 is wrong to offer sidearms and colored scarfs, I just don't see the value of it for me... And I'm not going to throw my money at 777 just to support them, no matter what they offer. If others do find the pack worth their 8$, intrinsically or as an opportunity to send cash their way I don't have a problem with that.

The St-Mihiel campaign, on the other, strikes me as a worthwhile expenditure if well executed.

I don't know, I'm not so sure COD is even worth that. I made the mistake of buying it for ten bucks , too. "How can you go wrong for that price?"
Well, the options screens won't work for me. And I was getting flashing colors in the cockpit. Uninstalled, and now I can't reinstall. Steam is telling me, "That title is unavailable."
I should have spent my money on another ROF airplane.

If you go over to the CoD tech forums I bet someone can help you. I think at $10 its about right (when you get it going !) If you want to hear about really selling your soul I got WoP and the Wings of the Luftwaffe expansion of Steam for $5. Its about as much of a sim as Fallout3 but it went straight on and ran plus on max everything it runs like hot butter. Its a blast to play and has given me a bit of a WW2 fix with eyecandy.

I've never had one minute of an issue with the RoF model of business, If I want it I can pay for it, if I don't want it I don't unless I use the excercise as a way of supporting the future development of the title. I might have been lucky with the game but it has always run well for me, in its current state is smoother than IL2 Classic and continues to grow and grow.

As to the campaign I am just starting but I'm hooked already. For the price of a couple of pints it seems like very cheap entertainment to me.

Just a couple questions:

1. Is it possible to flame balloons with the flare gun?

2. Do DH2 pilots have to worry about their scarf getting tangled in the prop and then get completely sucked through the blades?

Would also like to know if having a scarf on will help wipe the oil off the goggles(new oil graphics BTW are cool!)

No super computer. Quad core, I7 processor, 1 gb ATI vid card. Was top of the line when I bought it. Pretty average , now, I guess.
Was expecting a damn slide show from all the posts. Lots of, "I'm shelving this 'til they fix it," posts.
I had menu problems when I first openeded 'er up and thought, "Oh no, what the Hell did I do this for?"
In the game, itself, the only thing I see that might be considered an issue, is shimmering trees when I'm down low. The trees and their shadows have it. Not bad enough to be a game stopper.
Obviously, there were some major things wrong with this sim. Too many posts about it, to think nothing was wrong. I'm just glad I waited to pick it up.
But, I don't know. Seems oksy. Looks fixed. Well...its' running fine for me, anyway. I even have AA working. Closed it down in the ingame menu, and switched it on in the ATI settings. have it set to 4X. Might lower it to 2X and see if I can play this on Ultr-High.
If anyone is still reading this boring post, how do you disable the Ubisoft splashscreen? I read that it migght cure my menu issues. Thanks.

Good to see you got CoD to play well! smile

Did anybody notice that since the patch, the roll rate of the albatros is damn slow? The DIII doesn't really roll at all. It now takes ages. I havent changes the curves at all. I always fly with the default linear ones.

I've barely touched the SP side of ROF (I usually fly coop MP), so I'm passing on the campaign for now because I won't be touching it. Likewise I'm passing on the pistol for now as I can't hit the broadside of a balloon with the gunners in this game, let alone with a handgun.
That said, I think they should make more of this stuff. Everything won't appeal to everyone, but something will usually be good for someone.

Don't feel guilty because you've not bought X number of addons, feel good about the Y number you have, especially if you preordered since as Jason said that helps them even more. Believe me, they know what is selling and what is not, and that will alter their future plans. So don't buy something you dislike (because it will prod them to make more like that) but certainly buy the things you do (to prod them to make more like THAT). It's how things work. I've bought every plane and like all but 3 field mods because I want more of those.

FYI, if they made an MP-capable campaign I could fly coop I WOULD buy that.

The St. Mihiel campaign is pretty good so far. I like the use of media and the camera animations at the beginning of each mission.

I haven't got the new campaign yet, but I did enjoy the original linear campaigns. I used to have a "not dynamic, not interested" mindset, but the RoF campaigns showed that with a bit of effort (i.e. general plot, briefings, scripting), a linear campaign can be a fine experience.

I'm happy to send 777 another few bucks, especially for the campaign - a bargain given the rate of development IMHO.
I don't have nearly enough time to run a campaign with all the planes I purchased, but was happy to buy them.

I remember spending hours and hours....and then hours and more hours building and testing the "Liberation Skies" campaign for Il2 - one of the best ever produced if I do say so myself, and never received a thank you, let alone compensation. I'll be happy to support a good 3rd party effort in this way.

I wish I had a handle WWI history the way I do WWII. I'd give it a go.
In fact, maybe I should do a little more reading, and crack it open...
