Using the TSH install sequence and 4.02, I can get to the main screen once. Then, when I try to access it again, continuous CTD. I am starting it with DX Tweaker, as stated in TSH. Am I doing this incorrectly? Also, are there any compatability modes I need to check on the properties tab?

I installed in compat mode using win98
I did NOT use the default dir as rights issues in the Program Files dir can be annoying
I run single player w/o compat mode but Multiplayer caused constant crashes. Compat mode win98 seems to have solved that for me.

Good luck. Hope that helped!

Have you tried running it without DirectX Tweaker also.

I run it on another HDD, without the program files or x64 issues. I'll give the win98 mode a try, with and without DX Tweaker.

Gonna give that a whirl too, thanks for all actively keeping this bird alive.

Also, Rudel, with your thread on resources, are they compatible with TSH 4.02? Also, we are supposed to run all mods through JGSME, right?

You only need JGSME to install 4.02 or other releases from the current TSH website. Any other mod is up to you, on how you'd like to install it. I'll be creating a "How To" on making mods work with it. It's really simple actually.

The current compatible items available for TSH are:

except Runways, All Scenery Files
Flares
Tracers
Muzzle Flash
Cockpits
Afterburner Flames only
System/Nenu

Do take note that the Landpals only work in "Instant" Action since the new mission builder uses unified landpals.

Once I finish the non-TSH items, I will begin sorting the TSH stuff.

So, continued frustrations abound..............

I have teid running with and without DX Tweaker and I am only able to get to the splash screen, but have no options to choose from. I have run my mouse all over the splash screen, but nothing highlights. I have tried compatability mode and without compatability mode.

Can everyone that's running their installs in Windows7 and using TSH, please confirm your settings in both your shortcut properties and how you're able to get it to work. I really would love to play this, but am about ready to throw in the towel. Also, within the MODS folder, under TSH4.02, do I have to tweak the TSH manager? I don't see it offered to tweak like TSH 3.0 and under would offer.

Thanks

Matt

You really have two options:

a) Continue trying to make TSHv4.x plus DXTweaker plus JSGME plus various mods work. The results will be as you have already been experiencing, with great wailing and gnashing of teeth.

or

b) Use what works. (Works quite nicely on Windows 7 32bit or 64 bit, also.)

Hi Matt,

Are you also posting as 'J2' on the TSH Support forums? If not, I'll repost...

...anyone running TSH v4 on Win 7 is bound to have issues. Many many things can cause the CTD. I've been keeping up on this, and most users seem to be using Win2K mode. It is not required to run TSH in compatability mode. Like I've said before, every one has a different issue. I suspect it to be hardware/driver related though. It's a matter of finding the right combination.

JF18 was written on a 32-bit platform with DirectX 7 in mind. Being a nearly 11 year old sim will certainly have it's problems. With or without TSH.

Give v3.06 a try as Hedgehog mentions. VFA-41 is having great success with it.

Not my posting as J2 on TSH forums. Still no joy with Hedgehog's recommendation. All I get is the intro music on a black screen, I click the mouse, then hear tanks on next black screen, click it and then the main splash screen with no roll over menu selections. Truly frustrating and my apologies for taking anyone's valuable time or thought processes to help in figuring this out. Do either of you think I should play with compatability modes with the shortcuts posted on my desktop by the one step installer? Also, when I click on the Janes shortcut from the one step installer, I get there's no skunk.cmp.dll file so doesn't allow me to progress at times either.

I was also suprised the one step has the full game included, along with all the other assorted tweaks as well. Quite a nice package,

Matt

I will ask just in case...but did you do a fresh install of JF18 up to patch v1.01 before you installed v3.06?

Let's get this figured out:

- Did you select a 'World' with the Swapper before starting the exe? It is a must.
- With the TSH Manager, start with 1024x768 resolution first.
- What are your 3d settings for the F18.exe in the nVidia panel?

I only have a 8500GT but my settings are:

Ambient Occlusion - N/A
Anistropic Filtering - 4x
AA Gamma - Global Off
AA Mode - Override Any App Setting
AA Setting - 4x
AA Transparency - Off
CUDA GPU - Global All
Max Pre-Render Frames - Global 3
Multi-display/mixed-GPU Acceleration - Global Performance
Texture Filtering Anistropic Sample Optimization - Off
Texture Filtering Neg LOD bias - Clamp
Texture Filtering Quality - High Quality
Texture Filtering Trilinear Optimization - Global Auto
Triple Buffering - On
Texture Filtering Anistropic Filter Optimization - Off
Vertical Sync - Global 3D App

Just to be completely clear; 'up to but not including the v1.01 patch.'

Do NOT install any patches, mods, or updates before applying the One Click Updater. You install the sim from the CD, then apply the One Click Updater . That's all. You are done. Any other steps or process will certainly result in an installation failure.

VFA-41 pilots use TSHv3.06 with the One Click Updater in both Win7/32 and Win7/64.

Hedgehog, I'll try this when I get home this evening. I noticed the installer only installs on "C" drive. Can I change that? I prefer to put my simulations on a seperate HDD, "A" not on "C", since it contains the OS. I am not totally opposed to putting it on "C" if I must, but prefer "A" if possible. Also, noticed that one step installs shortcuts for the various tools contained within, thanks for adding that. It's a welcome addition to how much thought was put into the installer.

Rudel and Hedgehog, thanks for stayign with me thus far. I finally got it to work, marginally. I have to use DXTweaker and can get it to fly, but when I complete the mission and get the mission end prompt, I select yes and get a black screen.

Also, am unable to get my rudder pedals and throttle to work just yet, so tweaking with those settings. If you have any suggestions, will gladly take those as well.

This guy had that issue.  He turned off Aero to fix his issue.

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3368988/DXTweaker_works_but_game_crash.html#Post3368988

And your joystick issue..

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3332517/HOTAS_Warthog_advice.html#Post3332517

The rudder in the sim is not modeled correctly, but have you tried using it taxi-ing around to make sure it does work?

Update.....got it to work, finally. I have to use DXTweaker and ensure no compatability modes are enabled. Also ran NCAPE scenery, as instructed by Hedgehog before accessing any part of the game. I also tried to disable the intro movies and credits, bad juju! It didn't like that and wouldn't allow me to run the game at all. So, uninstall and reinstall, leaving the intros alone. Afterall, whats a bunch of colored blocks mean when the end result is playability.

Next two problems to work on are getting the throttle to work. It recognizes all three, joystick, throttle and pedals in the TSH utility, but only if I cycle through USB 1,2 and 3. I checked force USB in game and still only get joystick.

Second problem is quitting a mission I get a black screen. When I hit CTL-ALT-DEL to end task, I see the AAR screen, but am unable to get to it without the game crashing anyway. So, will have to play with that one a bit more.

Man, what a pain in the arse...reminds of the heady days of DOS and all of it's manipulation to get a particular game to work.

Thanks Rudel. Works like a charm now. Can I modify the in game resolution using the TSH resolution modifier? Have you or Hedgehog seen any bad results from using that?

Just hoping Joe comes up on the net with the discussion about the Warthog set up, not really sure what he's talking about to configure joystick and throttle.

Yeah, you can go ahead a change the resolution in the manager. I just wanted to start with the basics.

I hope Joe chimes in too. I don't have my Warthog connected yet so, I'm not sure what he's talking about. Check this this preview out about halfway through. I suspect Joe is talking about this...T.A.R.G.E.T. Axis Programming

Good day and wishing you a Happy New Year!

First, allow me to thank all oy you for this great site and keeping these older games alive. I've played many of the Jane's series including Longbow 2, Jane's Fighter Anthology, Jane's WWII fighters, etc. The one I always wanted to get but never did until recently was F-18 Superhornet. Thanks to the folks over at TSH, I was able to install it on my XP SP3 machine and fix the slow down in AA mode.

Alas, my old tower died and I have my new laptop. Thanks to this thread, I was able to successfully install F-18 in Windows 7 & resolve the slowdown in AA mode using the one click installer. Initially, the game would play starting it with DXTweaker but it seemed like the changes didn't have an affect on the game and there was the old slowdown in AA mode. What solved it for me and might help others is I run DXTweaker in Compat mode set for XP SP2. Nothing else in compat mode. Didn't see anyone else mention this but it does work.

Some questions if I may. I'll apologize up front if these have been answered elsewhere but I really stink at searching w/ keywords.

1) What do you use TSHv1 manager for? Is there a thread that explains how to use it?
2) same thing for TSHv3 manager. Should one be used in lieu of the other?
3) When using "Worldswapper", selecting "ncape" was no problem but if I select "Korea", the following message appears: "trouble finding wrapper.dll" Did I miss installing something? I'd really like to see the Korea campaign...

Your time in this matter is greatly appreciated!
Also, over the course of time I lost the Fighters Anthology CD's. I still have the spiral bound manual, install guide and keyboard reference card if anyone is interested.

3) When using "Worldswapper", selecting "ncape" was no problem but if I select "Korea", the following message appears: "trouble finding wrapper.dll" Did I miss installing something? I'd really like to see the Korea campaign... I only see ncape(Stock North Cape campaign and Iraq (TSH add on) No Korea on mine. You must select a campaign before starting Janes F18 the first time.

Your time in this matter is greatly appreciated!
Also, over the course of time I lost the Fighters Anthology CD's. I still have the spiral bound manual, install guide and keyboard reference card if anyone is interested.

As noted above, I also experience the AA slowdown but the thread located at top of forum discusses XP and Vista. What has anyone used to resolve this in Windows7? I tried Barry's work around and nothing using XP service pack2.

Matt

Korea? Only Ncape and Iraq is available.

For DirectX Tweeker, I went back just now and used the settings described in this thread:
http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2142199/F_18_with_no_banding_AA_slowdo.html#Post2142199

I really wish my new 'puter was finished so I can really help out. Im on Vista, but the AA slowdown goes away, with no crashing after a mission completion. As stated in that thread, Instant Action doesn't work.

I told you to disable some check boxes, and your CTD seemed to have been cured, but now you get AA slowdown. Go back and check one box at a time, to see if it helps. I think it's just a matter of finding the right settings...

OOOOOOPS! I meant Iraq. I was trying to post my questions before heading into work. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

In order to select playing in Iraq, I go to world swapper, select Iraq and then start the game? Or were you saying that I have to uninstall the game, go through all this again and select Iraq before starting F-18?

Forgive me if the answer should be obvious, I work in the emergency services and it's been a long day...

As before, your time in this matter is greatly appreciated!

Barry

I was editing my post when you replied.....

After you install everything, first use the world swapper to select a region before starting the simulation the first time.

Happy New Year btw smile

Hi Matt,

I'm trying to go through step by step what I did to make this work. You're using a Windows Basic Theme as your desktop background? Not an Aero Theme?

I had to make a sticky for myself to remember to switch out of Aero before playing.

I have got it up and running with the TSH 4.02 mod on a W7 64bit machine.

A couple of things though:

1. Resolution - I have 3 there but I was sure I remember more being there with TSH patches from years ago. I have a 27" monitor running at 1920x1080 and would be nice to have it at native res if possible?

2. Windows bar flashing along the bottom of the screen. I remember this from years ago too but not sure what happened about it.

3. I have a Warthog and the stick worked for pitch and roll but the throttle wouldn't work.

4. One last thing, I saw mentioned further up this thread about a 'one click updater', do I apply this too?

Use the TSH manager to select "Same as Desktop" under resolutions

2. Windows bar flashing along the bottom of the screen. I remember this from years ago too but not sure what happened about it.

Might be video card drivers or settings. Not everyone experiences this.

3. I have a Warthog and the stick worked for pitch and roll but the throttle wouldn't work.

Try what Joe says here:
http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3332517/HOTAS_Warthog_advice.html#Post3332517

4. One last thing, I saw mentioned further up this thread about a 'one click updater', do I apply this too? [/quote]

You do not need it. It is a full TSH v3.06 installation package.

Great! If you get your HOTAS to work, make a thread how you did it, so others can try too.

I don't have tabs anymore in DXT's v.K under Win7 x64. What's your version, Rudel?

Thanks,

My readme states "Public Beta 3"

It's the one included in the v3.06 1-Click Update
