As in, portrait-landscape-portrait. One 30" monitor in the center, flanked by a 20" monitor in portrait mode on each side. That is my personal ideal with existing monitors- the center 30" for most of the game view, for watching movies/TV, and most of desktop work. The two 20"s either side for just a bit more peripheral vision in game, and extra real estate for work and web browsing.

I know neither AMD nor NVIDIA currently offer this for their surround gaming solutions. I am curious to know if this is technially feasible and something that either company might be working on, or at least capable of.

PLP would rock for those of us who really want that massive 30" center screen, but who want a bit more peripheral vision in games.

edit: mis-read..

P-L-P in eyfinity wont work, as all screen have to be the same resolution.

it will work in desktop mode though.

Yeah Eyefinity needs all 3 monitors to be same resolution, but I've heard multiple reports of kegetys' SoftTH handling different size monitors fine, the only catch is that it is software based so there is a performance impact compared to h/w solutions like ATI/NV:
http://www.kegetys.net/SoftTH/

The price is free though, so if you have the spare monitors at home already, may be worth a try.

PS. Another good resource for info here:

You may want to check out the SoftTH Version 2.07 (alpha)

Used as 3 monitors as an "extended desktop" one can flip the side monitors using the stock AMD Vision Engine Control Center that is normally used to setup Eyefinity and everything else (used to be CCC). Works like you want for a desktop using my monitors. I just tried it.

With Eyefinity, all three monitors are merged horizontally into one monitor -- as others have noted. One cannot flip the sides. Does not work like you want for a game. Just tried it.

Some monitors may allow one to flip to portrait mode using the monitor buttons themselves (or maybe there are none like that). In that case, the Eyefinity merger might work. That's because Eyefinity and some games treat the three monitors as one large monitor with a given horizontal and vertical resolution. Can set the pixels in an ini file in some games. But, I had no way to try it.

This all may change, as the requested feature seems reasonable to provide in the long run.

Looks like 7000 series changes that.

One of the biggest success stories of the Radeon series was the introduction of Eyefinity. Eyefinity allows you to use multiple monitors in desktop and gaming mode. Typically you needed the very same monitors and resolutions, Eyefinity 2.0 changes that. You are now actually able to create a custom resolution. So if you have three difference sized monitors, you can actually get that working (not that I'd recommend it) .

Is this unique to the 7000 series or is this a new eyefinity feature for the 6900 series cards as well? So it would be possible to game at 1200x1600, 2560x1600, and 1200 x 1600 respectively across three monitors?
