Press party Dec 22. Meanwhile the performance rumor is too good to be true The single-GPU HD7970 is said to perform like the dual-GPU HD6990 -- like my guesses indicated. I stole this whole-article quote from Fudzilla: "According to our sources, the Radeon HD 7970 is about 30 percent faster in 3DMark when compared to the Radeon HD 6970. These are early performance benchmarks made with the first "usable" driver.
According to the whispers that we are hearing right now, Radeon HD 7970 should end up about 30 percent faster than the HD 6970. These are 3DMark early performance numbers probably done with the 12.1 RC driver that was, at least according to our info, released two days ago. This should put the HD 7970 somewhere around Radeon HD 6990.
We are also hearing that the HD 7970 does even better in game benchmarks and we hope that we'll have more details regarding those pretty soon, as after all, game benchmarks are the ones that really matters when it comes to performance of graphics cards. We still don't know if there will be another driver before first reviews hit the net, but AMD usually holds the final driver as long as it can to control the performance leaks.
Some slides have leaked over at Donanimhaber showing that Tahiti might do a lot better when it comes to tesselation, but once again we are talking about AMD slides so we tend to tread lightly there.
In any case, we'll know for sure on 22nd of December."

Another lift from Fudzilla -- similar to one above -- but more recent and detailed. Rumor says that single-GPU HD7970 exceeds dual-gpu GTX590 in some cases. This all makes sense based on 28nm process and new architecture. Still have to see if its really true. "...When compared to the HD 6970, the HD 7970 is around 50 percent faster in 3DMark 11 Extreme test. It scores around 2800 points while the HD 6970 can get up to around 1800 points. The HD 6990 scores around 3400 points in the same test, but according to our sources, HD 7970 is more than happy with a good OC that draws the card an inch away from the HD 6990. The previously reported 30ish percent was probably taken from 3DMark 11 Entry setting test where all the cards are closer in performance.
We were also told about the 3DMark 11 Performance setting performance that ends up on par with the HD 6990 but we aren't sure if these are with or without OC.
These numbers also mean that [the HD 7970] ends up faster than the Nvidia GTX 590 in some cases. Of course, as always, take these numbers with a grain of salt..."

For completeness, the HD7770 will be the lowest numbered Radeon graphics card using the NEW architecture and 28nm process. LOWER numbered Radeons will be REBRANDS of the HD6xxx and HD5xxx series. So, for example, HD7650 is really HD6650 which is really HD5650. If Nvidia did that, I'd complain -- oh, they already do Anyhow, rebranding an old design is not a practice I agree with -- no matter who does it. HD7770 Picture and Rumor So, if interested in HD7xxx, get an HD7770 or better -- or you'll be buying last year's model under a new name. If the news keeps being good and the price is not astronomical, I may buy one of the first HD7970s on December 22 -- if I hit the "add to cart" button quickly enough Otherwise, I'll have to wait until January. Of course, I do NOT expect to "see" the difference ("measure" yes, "see" no) in any of my games (vs 2x HD5870) -- just an AMD/ATI fan being a fan.

The rest of the slides are online: http://www.abload.de/gallery.php?key=qpOM1lvzSadly no slides for single card Eyefinity, but there's crossfire vs SLI @ 7680X1600. [EDIT] Correction: No graphs on the slides, but there are numbers for 7680X1600 on a single card. They bode well for Eyefinity on displays one resolution notch lower. But then again... 12MPixel gaming?

Nice link. Good info for one seriously looking at a potential December 22 purchase (assuming some hit the market). Yes, Eyefinity does look very good on a single HD7970. CrossFireX scaling looks very good. My CrossFireX 2x HD5870 system (using an AMD CPU) would win some and lose some vs a single HD7970 (with an Intel CPU). Overall, HD7970 would be a small improvement -- but, maybe enough for an AMD fan Later on, maybe a second card in CrossFire (when they get cheap in a year or so)? Leaning hard -- but still have to make the final decision. Need to see some independent test results.
