As the title says, is it?

I've been playing IL2 1946 in between Rise of flight sessions and when you combine the easier gunnery of IL2 with what seems like possibly better AI that doesn't do ridiculous maneuvers when it magically knows you're behind it. I have to say I'm enjoying IL2 a bit more than rise of flight at the moment, but I'm curious if people consider the AI to be realistic, obviously they can't behave exactly like human beings but I'm hoping they're at least a decent representation of how player pilot's fly minus the obvious squad tactics.

not really, some AI aspects never been fixed
if you wan't to see "a decent representation" that behave almost exaclty like human beings, try BOB2:WOV, Buddeye did shocking things to the AI

No. But it has been addressed somewhat through mods and the upcoming TD patch.

AI has a "plane on my six is coming into gun range"-detector, upon which it reacts with a break.

I think many will be impressed with the new AI coming in the new patch. The magical plane on my six thing that JAMF is talking about will be gone. So will shooting friendly bombers in a formation.

How will it be instead? Since I started playing Rise of flight and Il2 I've been real curious about how someone could implement the element of surprise in an AI.

In shooters the way it's done is very static, you're in a shadow, your sounds is below a specific meter and you're not in a small cone of vision. But in a flight sim it's different, maybe they could implement some sort of cone of view but then you'd have to have the AI scan for enemies occasionally and how do you do that without making it a very predictable or overly cheap "scan"?

Furthermore it seems like every flight sim ever is so caught up with flight models and realism in the flying, gunnery and mechanics that they forget that some people like playing against AI instead of players that have been around since flight sims began.

Is this BOB2 game any good? I watched some gameplay, looks cool but being the battle of britain there won't be Fockewulf 190's which is the only WW2 plane I enjoy. Is it as accessible as IL2 1946 is?

Yes. Quite good. The AI can be surprised and lost because it can't see you all the time.
