Loading textures caused the same problem in Il-2. A very experienced mission builder can fix this by having all aircraft spawned in when the mission loads, but most don't do this because you have to plot a lot of flight courses individually to make the timing work the way it is intended.
When Ccrashh made the Enterprise campaign for Il-2, this was something he employed because we had pointed out the pauses in past campaigns caused by aircraft spawning in. The only draw-back was that some of the missions had to be tested many times due to timing problems.

Actually others have brought it up, with some excellent technical analysis, and then been immediately banned for their irreverence. I am hesitant to mention names, as I am perilously close to being banned myself.

I suspect everyone gets this. I assume the only way to prevent it would be to load everything as the mission starts, taking the performance hit.
I seem to remember in IL2 that some mission designers had every aircraft model sat as parked somewhere on the map to load it before the spawn trigger. I don't see how you could do something similar in ROF.

Mobster, I don't get it now and I don't have an ssd. But Bandy who does have an ssd gets the stutter on spawn. It certainly sounds like the textures loading is the culprit but maybe there's something a little more subtle going on?

Well, that's a relief, meaning it isn't just my system or install. When a new airplane spawns in SP there is always a pause on my machines. I assume this is because the simulation is loading the plane into memory (the higher detail bombers tend to lead to larger pauses).. That is my thought, but as mentioned I have a solid state drive, so a " loading into memory" stutter shouldn't happen, certainly not a second or more for a few MB. I defer to those with more hardware knowledge, i.e. correct me if wrong. Now, this only developed relatively recently within the last few updates, and as far as I can tell, nobody else has brought this up! Strange. Hmm... well one should think that an uncompressed mission format would be faster to read. But load times used to be >doubled with mods-on (prior to the current patch). One would think text files wouldn't be such a problem... ah, programming.

I don't get it now and I don't have an ssd... Question CG, do you play Pat's campaign mission generator or RoF career beta??? It happens in those missions, likely not in MP, or Quick action, or the default missions. I'm formulating an experiment with a few other folks, and will report.

I've only skimmed this thread but I'm curious if those that are experiencing this tend to have smaller amounts of system RAM. I don't really get this and didn't with my previous setup which had 8gb of RAM. My game install is also not on an SSD drive. I'm guessing that others are right in that it relates to texture loading and having more RAM (both in the system and on the video card) should help. Just thought I'd throw that out there for a possibility based on my less than stellar knowledge about such things.

Hey Bandy,
I play almost exclusively in Career B, mods off.
I dabbled with PWCG and then the Career B got released and I've been playing a couple of careers ever since.

...I'm curious if those that are experiencing this tend to have smaller amounts of system RAM. I don't really get this and didn't with my previous setup which had 8gb of RAM. ... One would think so, but I have 11 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of VRAM on my XFX 4870, as well as a SSD. RoF is also 'patched' for users who have a 64 bit OS (I have Win7 x64) to allow RoF to allocate up to 4 GB of system RAM only to RoF. I did not see this stutter before a few months ago, it is a recent development for me, and others. May be related to the update that allows missions to load quickly, perhaps related to Mods On (which I do), I just don't know yet. I make no allusion to being a games/hardware guru, this stutter may coincide when textures are loading, but not be the root cause. Just a thought. Some may scoff at us bringing this to the community's attention, but if you play RoF without any game cheats/crutches (no aircraft map icons, no BVR labels, etc.) then the stutter tells you that an imminent encounter is going to happen. Instead of constantly scouring the sky to make visual contact, you just sit there like a gormless twit and wait for the stutter and only then pay attention to the sky. No, it isn't a 'game breaking' issue --I will continue playing RoF-- but it wasn't always like that. It negatively changes the way I and others play this fine simulator.

One would think so, but I have 11 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of VRAM on my XFX 4870, as well as a SSD. I told you I was skimming! I missed that in your sig. So much for that theory! When I first saw your post I went into the game last night and tested things out in the Career B mod and in QMB missions (you siad it doesn't happen there though) and I really am not seeing it. I can get a rare pause once in a blue moon during a mission but it seems unrelated to spawning aircraft as I have externals on and checked to see if a new plane had spawned in and it hadn't. I wonder if it relates to the AMD stuff again. They haven't been very helpful/supportive of the RoF team trying to work with them to iron out some of the issues with those cards? Some may scoff at us bringing this to the community's attention, but if you play RoF without any game cheats/crutches (no aircraft map icons, no BVR labels, etc.) then the stutter tells you that an imminent encounter is going to happen. Instead of constantly scouring the sky to make visual contact, you just sit there like a gormless twit and wait for the stutter and only then pay attention to the sky.
No, it isn't a 'game breaking' issue --I will continue playing RoF-- but it wasn't always like that. It negatively changes the way I and others play this fine simulator. Never hesitate to mention any issues you find with the game, it's the only way to help the team identify them and track them down to be fixed. Who cares what others think/say/feel if they don't have the issue! If enough people have the problem and there's a way to consistently reproduce it then you have to let the team know so they can try and reproduce it themselves and figure out a fix. I can understand your frustration, especially since you didn't have it before... Hope a fix is found soon!
