GRRRRR,

yesterday out of the blue my system didn`t boot anymore. The SSD (a 64 GB Supertalent) doesn`t even show up in the BIOS anymore.

Checked the cables, changed the port, nothing.

Thankfully I have made backups with Acronis. Question, do I have to get the same model of the SSD again or can I get a different one and restore to it? On the SSD is my C: partition with the Win7 and some basic programs, no games.

TIA

K.

You can buy any make drive you like, however some backup solutions have trouble restoring data to a smaller drive than the one user to make the image. I can't recall Whether Acronis is one of these. Check their FAQ for a precise answer, but you should be ok with a drive of any make that is the same size or bigger than your 'brick'.

Can't you get a replacement SSD? Or do these not come with warranties?

I think it is still in the warranty, but to be honest, after reading a bit the last days, I don`t want a Supertalent SSD anymore, I`ve read a lot about failing SSDs exact the same way my one failed.

Plus, I think this time I would buy a 128 GB.

Very easy to move to a 128GB, Acronis also does well moving to smaller ones.

Windows 7 Image Backup is not so good at moving to smaller disk sizes.

THX guys,

I`ve ordered a new Crucial 4M 128GB SSD today. Hopefully my images will work. I`ll report back.

Oki,

here we are again. The new SSD was recognized okay from BIOS.

Restored with Acronis, but got a BSOD when I booted from the SSD. 7 adviced an auto-repair from the 7 CD, which unfortunately failed. In the advanced options it offered going back to one restore point, which in the end was successful. System is back up and running.

However, unfortunately the allignment on the new SSD is wrong, so I have to do some more work.

Failing storage, what fun. Even with a payed backup solution. banghead
