Cenkog, See Ranger and myself talk about the ATI 9700 Pro in this thread http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=32;t=006738
I just posted some screenshots in there.
F18 runs great with the 9700 pro, with the exception of the water grid problem which is easily fixed by turning off water sparkle and LOD textures.
I just got this 9700 yesterday and I cant rave enough about it, it really is fast and looks great.
BTW- I went from a GF4 4200 to the 9700

Cenkog,

hi.

Flawless drivers? Eh! \:\) Once upon a time, popular wisdom had it that ATi had rotten drivers but good cards. Nowadays, Nvidia also has bad drivers (fortunately, not that many).

Now...The best card out there is the ATi 9700 Pro. At 19.7 GB/sec, you can't go wrong. But it's expensive.

Nvidia has the GFX, which can go way up to 32 GB/sec (horrendous number!) - but it's nowhere in Europe right now.

So, you can purchase GF4 TI4600 or the GF4 Ti4800, which sport a little over 10.4 GB/sec (fast enough for me). This one is becoming less and less expensive by the month.

The Catalyst drivers (ATi's) are improving, and Nvidia still has some very good drivers (4109s, the 4345s).

GFx cards with over 64 MB DDR memory are the best offer, right now.

That is very true Chronus,
In defence of the ATI 9700pro, I will say this though. I was going to do my yearly upgrade of MB/CPU/RAM and this time go for another Video card. Fortunately, I bought the 9700pro first. Now the rest of the upgrade is not needed lol. So, the extra $ of the 9700pro was realy worth it lol. BTW, I upgraded to 9700pro FROM the GForce 4600 and the 9700pro spanks that Nvidia card uh, any driver lol. Only issue I have is not able to use FSAA at all with F-18 but at 16x12 and the tab I finaly foud in Rage3d tweak
that Seawolf turned me onto I have no more shimmer and stupid fast frame rates lol.
I am running a P4A Northwood 2.0 gig(400mhx bus) and a gig of 2100 DDR. LOCKON may force me to finish this upgrade but I doubt it. By the time LOCKON is released, I will have the $ with out a big setback if I must upgrade.

Lock On will run fine on your system, I'm sure. If it doesn't, INTEL is dropping prices by the week, now, so you'll be able an inexpensive 2.8 or a 3 GHz soon.

That card of yours is good. But it has recently been surpassed by the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, which has 21 GB/sec bandwidth. It's a monster! \:\)

My hopes are that the GFX and ATi's best will put prices down quickly - that way I'll upgrade to either a Radeon 9700 Pro or a GF4 TI480.

Wasn't the Nvidia GFX cancelled?

The GeForce FX 5800 Ultra was only delivered in extremely limited quantities. This card has a 500M MHz core clock and a 1000 MHz memory clock.

The GeForce FX 5800 is, believe, readily available, and has a 400M MHz core clock and a 800 MHz memory clock.

The 5600 and 5200 are the performance and budget versions of the 5800, respectively, and have slower clocks and perhaps less memory.

Anyway, shouldn't matter. Read the reviews yourself, but ATI is the way to go right now.

I really can't comment on the game cards from either manufacturer...but I do use the professional cards from both, and can state quite definately that nVidia's Quadro cards have no peers with regards to price/performance from ATI or anyone else for that matter.

They quite simply dominate every product benchmark that we have ever tested them on. Take note that this is not a generic benchmark, but rather a test suite which runs in our applications (AutoCAD, Inventor, StudioMax, Combustion, etc.) and emulates standard workflow. The Quadro boards have not lost a single benchmark category since the Quadro2 was introduced...and that was about two years ago. If you want to make a purchase based on "seat of the pants" evaluations...that is fine. But make no mistake about it, ATI has not a single board that is even "on par" with the Quadro's.

Oh, by the way, it runs games pretty decently as well. I run a Quadro980 XGL at the moment, and I typically see about 50F/ps at 1280x1024 in F/A-18, Ghost Recon is even higher. I have no idea what the ATI boards are capable of, but as long as nVidia keeps pumping out hardware that statistically runs our applications as quickly as theirs do, I have no intention of finding out.

As Joe said, there aren't that many GFX around.

But there are already some retailers selling them. They're expensive and the Ultra 5800 is hugely fast.

But...not worth my money.

3DLabs is improving its Visual Processing Units. Plus, they intend to use them with *guess what+ the AGP killer : PCI Express.

If INTEL follows its plans, we should be in for a huge surprise in 2004/2005. Gfx bandwidth will grow beyond the astonishing 21 GB/sec of the ATI Radeon 9800 or the 32 GB/sec of the GFX 5800 Ultra.

And to think that I own quite a fast card (GF2 GTS Pro, capable of 6.34 GB/sec)...

Scary... \:\)
