Hello all,
I just wanted to say Wow! I had left JF-18 some time ago, after the various issues with banding and everything else, but am amazed at how it's still managed to progress after more than 10 years.
Has there been any work in updating the scenery, as best as can be expected with a rather dated engine. I am honestly looking forward to the VRS Tacpack and FSX@war to be released to take the FSX VRS Superhornet to a higher graphic level. The upside to FSX, obviously grpahics, however, the upside to JF-18 is the mission and campaign immersion. Please don't mistake my remark as a knock against JF-18, I think what you've done is fantastic and really looking forward to getting back into this sim for it's depth of immersion.
Matt

There is a 'Terrain Detail Improvement' you can easily install. It's not anything like FSX scenery, but it does make a difference at low altitudes. You can see examples and download => HERE

Thanks Hedgehog for the link. They do look much better than the stock terrain. I am suprised no one has made a tree add on, would really enhance the updated look, though certain it would tear up frame rates too.
Gonna re-install this weekend. Thanks again.

Rudel,
I will certainly give all of this a go when I get home tonight. I hadn't seen any screenies posted showign trees, so assumed there were none. Since I am taking my laptop to Geek Squad today, free's up much time for using my desktop and getting back into some flight sims.
Thanks, Matt

Have you installed TSH v4.02? It has tree features Umm, yeah... "trees" in the very loosest sense of the word. I couldn't find any images of the alleged "trees," but when you see them, well... you be the judge.

Tree-like objects... Well, not too bad since it is a dated graphics engine. I'm just suprised how long it's been played and supported, though a bit suprised that someone hasn't tried to update the code for better graphics, such as the tree and objects. Thanks for all the info. Matt

Source Code issues are preventing ua from doing so, but there are break-throughs being mmade as you read.

but there are break-throughs being mmade as you read. Very cool. If I gave it much thought I would be infuriated that EA will not release the source code for such an old game. I try not to give it much thought. I hate EA.

I keep hoping DCS will provide us with a SuperHornet sim to replace this one. I am not sure DCS is up to it, Janes F/A18 leaves big shoes to be filled. I fly Janes because I am not willing to accept "dumbed down" systems and arcade game play. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Look at what they have done with FC2 and much of the work is done. All they need to do make the Naval Flanker and Frogfoot have a baby, call it an F-18 and viola

Pfffsh. I have great faith in DCS to create either an F-14 or F/A-18 sim that would fill up those shoes. +1 Agree that there is already much in place to support F-18 easily. Matt

Source Code issues are preventing ua from doing so, but there are break-throughs being mmade as you read. I am just hoping some of these "break-throughs" result in some interim patches before I am too old and feeble to enjoy them. I am not so much interested in the graphics themselves as opposed to making them work with newer systerms and graphics card. My interest is in the promised weapons fix, and then an addressing ofsome of the other aircraft systems performance issues. Unfortunately, having to learn computer programming technology came along too late in life for me to get involved in addressing these issues. I am thankful for TSH, VFA-41 and all the great individuals who have contributed to this sim that I love.

SAMS book are good to quickly get the basics (Teach yourself C++ in XXhours/days). Gamedev.net also has quite a good amount of articles on starting programming in general and game programming. Most importantly, you will get discouraged and frustrated and first with C++, but you have to keep trying. I'm far from being a top notch C++ developer and I often hit walls, but I've learned to just tell myself "It's only a matter of time before it works... need to search more". You actually will be pretty proud of yourself when you first executre that first Hello World program

Whilst not a C++ guru, I have written some OOB and campaign editors for a couple of wargames (my other gaming interest) so I'd love to lend a hand if needed.

The sim is entirely 16-bit so it's only a matter on creating 32-bit versions of a lot of funtions, some of which are written in ASM

In other words, can we update the current installer and make it a more inclusive package available to all? I have always loved this sim and anything to bring it up to a newer standard would just be fantastic. Remove the wideview before you send it ...lol Rudel, can you add any changes to the current TSH files? If so, will you let us know when its available? I failed to realize how many people still played this sim and its great to see so much support to keep updating it. Matt

Remove the wideview before you send it ...lol Sure... actually, I should make this an option in the config screen... Strykerpsg, unfortunately, chances are new mods will not be compatible with the TSH exe... we could try creating exe patches, but I doubt it will work. Bad news is, there is a chance that all TSH mods created to date have to be rewritten from scratch... but we should double check with Frenchy...

IAM, I think patching 3.06 and 4.02 exe will be ok with an exe. VFA-41 could test the 3.06. [:D]
Seems like 3.06 is the standard for most, but there are a few for 4.02.
