Just used my auto overclock switch on my mobo, and having never ventured into cpu overclocking before I wanted to ask some questions.

1. CPUZ reports 4190mhz whereas windows seems to think its only 3.29 a minute underclock! I tend to believe CPUZ though, everything seems snappier. Why would windows missreport?
2. Cores are maxing out at 63 degrees C under PRIME 95, this seems ok to me. I've seen reports of much higher temps, what do guys think?
3. CPUZ reports V.core of 1.344, from what I understand thats a little high, though if my temps are under control does this matter?
4. I just know someones going to recomend starting from scratch and doing it manually, I probably will at some point so go ahead and convince me why!

is this the i5?? If so if you have an aftemrmarket Cooler you can easily get 4.3ghz.. Also did you get the new CPU-Z?? If so that is probally what it is set at..

Did you notice in CPU-Z it going up and down in speed??the TCase for the i5 is 72.6 so you are fine How long did you run Prime 95 for??

Its the 2500k I5, see my sig for my rig. Prime 95 has been running for about an hour, and its still going as I type this. Temps seem to have settled at 61. At stock the max Prime 95 temps were around 53C. And yes it is the new GPUZ, and the values for the vcore are ranging between 4190.2 and 4190.6 42x multipier and 99.8MHz bus speed.
Also I have the Be Quiet 'Dark Rock Advanced' CPU cooler.

Well look into "Intel Burn Test". the CPU temp will get Hot quick with this one run for about 10mins to check for 24/7 Stability.. REMEMBER MONITOR YOUR TEMP CLOSELY.. 72.6 is the limit.. so it should be lower thgen that but just monitor it cause this test will use the CPU 100%..

It may take up to 20 runs with Max RAM USage..Also at 4.1 I would say you could lower the Voltage.. at 4.4 the VCore should be at about 1.3v..

A gnats whisker under 4.2 so I think its fair to call it that! Prime 95 has been running for nine hours now, thats 100% load on all cores, max temp 64 agv temp 61C so I think its fair to say its stable.
Just deciding whether to try upping the multilpier to x45, or lowering the vcore to something a bit more sensible. I'm off to work now so I'll sleep on it!

Those auto OC utilities work pretty good. For stability, they apply way more juice to the CPU than is necessary to reach a high OC though. Just to reach 3.7Ghz on mine, the software OC feature combined with the buttons built into the board to OC will raise the vcore to more than the 1.45 max recommended by Intel. I observed the auto OC feature on my board running about 1.55, which is suicide run high. If you are only keeping the computer for a couple of years, it's moot. Most CPUs will take over-voltage for a while. But damage from over voltage is cumulative and cannot be reversed. So after a year and a half or two years of excessive voltage, the CPU will quietly go off on it's own little permanent vacation.

You could probably get that CPU to run a 4.4Ghz or so with much less voltage. It would take some effort on your part though to do it in the BIOS. Higher voltage is required to get those massive OC. The downside is reduced CPU life and heat.

Electron migration occurs when voltage is too high. Kind of like electricity arcing or going where it is not supposed to go. Once that occurs, it's easier for it to occur again at an even lower voltage. That's why some OCers find it takes more and more voltage over time to keep the same OC, because they have damaged the CPU and it will always get worse, not better. With the eventual death of the processor in the end.

I've always OC all my computers. You can do it for years if you keep it cool and don't go overboard on voltage.

I wasn't aware that the "auto-OC" functions tended to up the voltage by more than necessary.
I used the ASUS util to perform the OC on my board but never bothered to check what it had used to achieve the OC... thanks for the tip.
I usually OC manually, without boosting the v-core by much. I may get into the bios and drop the v-core just to see if it remains stable at a lower level with the same OC.

Tried 4.5 Ghz with 1.28 Vcore, BSOD after around 20mins. Retesting at 4.5GHz (45 multiplier) with 1.29 Vcore, seems ok after 45mins, will report back.

Run Prime95 if you want to test for stability.

Cheers mate, I should've said, thats exactly what I am doing. Torture test running for 71 minutes and counting. Fingers crossed it'll be stable this time, max temp so far is 59C, 4 or five degrees lower than the auto OC @ 4.2Ghz.
