So there's this county sheriff around here who likes hiding back in the trees and in driveways of For Sale homes. He had a laser one day, too. I've had an Escort Passport 9500ix for a couple of years, and a bet with the wife over who gets the first ticket - I'm driving a fast 2010 Charger R/T. So mid-October I get a flyer from Escort about this new Live! network they are rolling out. It's an $80 power unit replacement that has Blue Tooth and works with my iPhone 3GS (or an Android). When I get an alert on my detector, the coordinates will be sent to my cell phone and to a national network, and then the alert is broadcast to all the Escort Live! drivers in my area. Got an email this afternoon that the unit has shipped. Really looking forward to having this. Escort Live! Wrecking Crew

So you will gladly pay for a device that indicates where there is someone there to make sure you keep your speed within parameters, when you could just you know, drive within the limits ? .....okay....drive smarter inded. .

You know what a ticket does to insurance rates? Neither do I. And there's the bet with The Babe... I save $20 right off the bat. WC

I drive a Magnum r/t and I endorse this thread.
However detectors are illegal in the Great White North, so I just use discretion.

I live in the last state where radar detectors are illegal. Only 1 ticket in 10 years of driving and that was because I thought a speed limit changed 1/4 mile closer to the construction on the road than it did.

Got this unit last Friday. Good interface, looks to be effective. I have not received any net alerts yet, but the unit did send one out yesterday when a sheriff came up the highway with his radar on.
Downside is that the iPhone sucks up the power, as Location Services and Blue Tooth are On. If I don't connect my iPhone to the car's interface/charger then the phone will use *all* of its battery power in less than 40 minutes.

I must admit that I have mixed feelings about radar detectors.....everybody likes to "thumb their nose" at the speed trap now and then....but I see A LOT of folks injured and killed because of excessive speed on busy roads.
It's a fine line bewteen a radar detector to get away with speeding and hacking into a police network to get away with some other sort of crime.

Speed limits are stupidly low on the open highway. And no one follows them anyway.
I usually follow the speed limits inside town.

Well, I can appreciate the controversy. I can also appreciate that *many* drivers are not very good, and that all drivers will be distracted at times. Interesting, too, is the NTSB's recommendation to ban electronic devices in vehicles (not that I want this to turn into a political thread).
I have not had a traffic ticket or an accident in over 20 years, and I do like to drive fast when it is not a danger to other drivers. These days most of my commuting time is on county roads without much traffic. Many times going to and from work for half the way I don't have any cars in front or behind me, so if I want to step it up to 60 MPH in a 45 then it ain't gonna endanger anyone. And the last thing I want to do is ding my Charger.
If a driver is acting dangerously then there are *plenty* of other drivers out there who know to call 911 or *CSP (in Colorado) (provided cell phones aren't banned) and report those idiots. A few years ago a driver was following me up through New Mexico on SH 54 while beating up on his passenger, so I called 911 on my cell and the cops pulled the guy over when we got to Vaughn. My point is that a dangerous driver is a threat to be reported and stopped, and that a radar detector and this Live! network is not a danger, in itself.
Had a friend who while riding his motorcycle got some air over some railroad tracks and the sheriff who pulled him over said, "I'm not so big on speed, but I am BIG on danger!"
So if I saw some idiot driving *dangerously* and thinking that their radar detector was going to save them from being pulled over then they have me to worry about, too.

I'd have this just for the cool gadget factor. LOL As for radar detectors, I got more tickets back when I had one than when I didn't. And that's saying a lot, my list is pretty long. These days, I stick to within limit + 10% now. Radar detectors gave me a false sense of security, and they don't work when the guy aims at you and THEN turns it on. LOL Plus most of my driving is around here where there are neighborhoods and kids all over the place, so I'm pretty conservative now.
Even with all of my tickets, I've never had an insurance rate hike, they don't check around here unless you're applying for a new policy (including life insurance).
