This is a huge loss. Del Toro is one of the best actors in the industry.

F Murray Abraham is no slouch, but we saw how his ST role panned out. It's possible either the script or the finances were wrong for him, or even scheduling, who knows? All I can say is you can't judge so-and-so is "right" or "wrong" for ST because I've seen far too many "obvious" failures work and "sure things" fail.

Top 5 most common plot devices in the Star Trek universe,
1. Transporter malfunction causing some sort of mayhem or emergency.
2. Alien race infiltrates the ship and takes it over.
3. Alien planet found that is stuck in some alternate past Earth history.
4. Time travel.
5. Crew member catches some kind of disease and brings it back on board infecting others. That's a TOS list. Starting with TNG, there was a new one added that totally replaced #3--misadventures on the holodeck. #5 was used a few times, but it really was supplanted more by "crew member gets personally involved with alien species/planet/civil war and drags the rest of the cast into it". This was in TOS as well (like Eminiar VII?), but it expanded greatly in the later series. The Jedi Master

Just heard that Peter Weller has been signed. For some weird reason, the first character to pop in my head for him was Commodore Decker.
Come on, it'd be awesome!

Well, there are some historical figures in the History that have been mentioned, Col. Green for instance but I think he figures into the Eugenics Wars which is also where Khan came from. Now with a new timeline to play with they may divert from the canon so the fans won't be able to second guess plot lines, and characters will be free to do something other than what played out in the series. Who knows maybe this time around Nurse Chapel falls for Kirk or even McCoy instead, not Scotty of course he's in love with his engines.

It will be great to see Peter Weller in the new Trek film.
I'm wondering if we'll see Admiral Pike (Bruce Greenwood) in this next film?

Probably not, there likely won't be much for him to do.

I'd rather they boldly go to a hole new adventure then retread old ground.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=84983Well, it looks like they're definitely getting a Latino for the role: Following word earlier this week that Benicio Del Toro turned down a leading role in J.J. Abrams' untitled Star Trek sequel, comes a report from Variety that Edgar Ramirez is now a strong contender, likely for the same role. He's far from a lock, however, and Jordi Molla is also said to be up for the part.
So if it's not Khan, it will certainly be someone with that appearance. The Jedi Master
